Exclusive: More details surface regarding Hyundai’s new pickup truck

When the 2015 North American International Auto Show occurred, Hyundai surprised the audience and media with their Santa Cruz Concept, their first-ever pitch to a possible pickup truck from the South Korean automaker. And the reactions and feedback leaned on the side of positive a lot more than expected–so much in fact that Hyundai’s actually seeking to pursue this prospect for production.

Hyundai recently proved time over time to show improvement with the turn of every generation of their models, from making highly competitive mainstream automobiles, to successfully producing their first-ever globally-accepted full-size and midsize luxury sedans, the Equus and Genesis. So in our minds, we don’t doubt their capability of pulling a competitive pickup truck.

As a result, we exclusively heard the Santa Cruz should be ready for approval later this year at the launch of the 2016 Tucson recently, as CEO Dave Zuchowski was explaining Hyundai’s intent to build more factories around the world to support the relentless demand for crossovers. In the process, they’ll slowly prepare their production lines for this new Santa Cruz.

Not much else is known about the production variant to the Santa Cruz, but Zuchowski reassured that feedback was strong enough to make a compelling business case for Hyundai to take the prospect seriously.

Are you excited and intrigued about Hyundai’s first-ever pickup truck? We are too. Would you like it to be a unibody for versatility and car-like performance? Or would you rather it be more truck–like with a body-on-frame construction and better utility?
