Not too long ago, we received a whiff of some news regarding the possibility of a Hellcat-ified version of the Jeep Grand Cherokee, a one-up version to the full-fledged SRT8 version.
And now, according to CARandDRIVER, it seems the idea is going to happen with the version surfacing as the 2017 Jeep Grand Cherokee Trackhawk.
The premise is simple: take a Jeep Grand Cherokee SRT8, swap out the 470hp 6.4L HEMI V8 with the Dodge Challenger and Charger Hellcat’s 707hp 6.2L supercharged HEMI V8, beef up the brakes, suspension, and chassis, and voila–an American SUV that will most likely be the fastest of its kind in the entire market.
Sounds like a great idea right? But that’s not all as a “base” Trackhawk model is speculated to replace the aforementioned SRT8 version with an upgraded variant to the naturally-aspirated 6.4L HEMI V8 with around 475hp.
Though according to some recent tips, C/D heard that engineers are having trouble beefing up the Grand Cherokee’s driveline to handle the Hellcat motor’s monstrous torque. As of now, there are only two solutions: electronically limit the torque in lower gears, or just totally remove the four-wheel drive system. Let’s just hope they don’t cut any corners and rush anything as they did with the Jeep Cherokee’s ZF-sourced nine-speed automatic.
Either way, we’re told to expect the Trackhawk versions of the Jeep Grand Cherokee in the later half of 2016 as 2017 models, not just in dealers, but at your local gas stations and drag strips chugging tons of fuel and eating Mitsu Evos for breakfast, lunch, and dinner.
