Some sad news is ringing in from Mitsubishi by way of Forbes as they report that the Japanese automaker will end production at its US-based plant in Normal, Ill. due to under utilization.
But that doesn’t necessarily mean that Mitsubishi’s also exiting the US market, despite the automaker struggling to remain competitive among its larger Japanese peers.
“The North American market remains a priority,” a spokesperson told Forbes in a statement. “We will continue to sell Mitsubishi cars, including current and planned models, at Mitsubishi dealerships across the United States.”
It is however bad news for all 1,280 full-time employees at the plant with roughly 1,000 of them being UAW workers. They’ll be forced into long negotiations about a contract within the next month. They are also the only workforce to operate under a union at a Japanese-owned factory in the US.
Mitsubishi’s plant in Illinois has been around since 1988 and has since gathered many subsidies, both locally and state and so thus, this is a huge uproot to the community.
As of Friday, Mitsubishi will be forced to end production temporarily as they find a buyer for the factory.
