Some exciting rumors rolled in from Australia’s Drive.com, recently regarding the Holden Commodore.
Word is that the Commodore could receive a nice little treatment from Holden’s HSV performance division by slotting the LS9 supercharged V8, from the last-generation Chevrolet Corvette ZR1, under the hood of the Commodore, to make an even faster version.
How much faster? The last Corvette ZR1 churned out a healthy 638hp and 604 lb-ft of twist, and that’s quite a lot more than the standard Chevrolet SS Sedan’s 415hp and 415 lb-ft of twist
That sounds like sex to our ears, but it should be pointed out that the Holden Commodore doesn’t seem to have much time left since General Motors officially announced to be closing Holden’s only factory in Elizabeth, Australia. This doesn’t clearly indicate the end of Holden, but the Commodore is one of several Holden products exclusively made in GM’s plant down yonder and it’s slated to end production in 2017, leaving the car’s future as uncertain. And of course, the Holden Commodore is sold here as the Chevrolet SS Sedan and the Chevrolet Caprice patrol car.
Not much else is known, but speculation suggests that General Motors is seeking to put its stockpile of remaining LS9 V8s to good use since the Chevrolet Corvette ZR1 ended production a little while back. This was the case with the current Chevrolet Camaro Z/28, which gets its power from left over LS7 V8s from the last generation Corvette Z06.
Should all hold to be true, a starting price of around $100,000 is expected along with very limited production, all in an attempt to possibly take on the Dodge Charger SRT Hellcat. There’s no indication whether or not it would come stateside, but then again, we never thought we’d see the Holden Commodore on our shores again, albeit with a V8, a manual transmission and magnetic adaptive suspension.
