Report: A new Toyota FR Concept to debut at Tokyo

Some new rumors are rolling in from Motoring down yonder in Australia, who report of a new Toyota FR Concept supposedly due at the Tokyo Motor Show later this year.

Details are sparse, but the new FR Concept is said to be previewing a next-gen GT86 model, which also means a new Scion FRS and Subaru BRZ.

However, there wasn’t particularly any specific word regarding whether or not the new model will be collaboratively designed and produced with Subaru, like the current model.

The recipe though is expected to remain unchanged, meaning front-engine placement, rear-wheel drive, and a low curb weight to prioritize handling. A figure of approximately 2,160lbs is speculated.

Handling, which has always been a major characteristic of the GT86 trio, not straight-line speed, this time is said to be in the process of being developed by four-time World Rally Championship winner, Tommi Makinen.

Power is expected to come from a new 1.5L four-banger with around 128hp. It doesn’t sound like much, but the low curb weight should provide the new GT86 with a strong power-to-weight ratio and should be geared to directly compete with the Mazda Miata.

Should all go well, a sale launch should happen in 2017.
