Report: Next-gen Volkswagen Tiguan could get a 300hp Coupe R version

Germany’s having a love affair with the “coupe” style crossover, first with the likes of the BMW X6, now with the Mercedes-Benz GLE Coupe, and soon, Audi’s reportedly in the works with their own version called the Q6.

But it doesn’t end there since AutoCar reportedly heard Volkswagen might make a Tiguan-based “coupe” version when the next-generation model rolls around within the near future. It was first previewed by the Volkswagen CrossCoupe GTE from the 2015 Detroit Auto Show.

So basically, it’ll be a regular Tiguan that’s been modified to be less practical, with a lowered roofline, and a more hunkered stance, all in the name of style. It’ll probably cost more too. Though the more important part of this snippet is a rumor of a possible new range-topping, high-performance R version.

Volkswagen’s been pushing their new R performance brand by introducing new models like the recent Golf R and Scirocco R (which us Americans sadly never received). Additionally, we’ve seen some sportier themed models with Volkswagen’s R Line packages and since they’re building the brand even more, word is the next-generation Tiguan “coupe” could also get the full-fledged R treatment.

This means a supposed 2.0L TFSI turbocharged gasser four with 300hp and 280 lb-ft of twist, lifted straight from the Volkswagen Golf R, dual-clutch automatic and all. Similarly to the Golf R, electronic torque vectoring should be equipped next to a performance-tuned adaptive suspension setup. The intended result: a 0-62 time of just 5.1 seconds.

The next-generation Tiguan is expected to surface at Frankfurt next month and is expected to get additional models as an “expanded line.” So this includes the standard Tiguan, a “coupe-like” Tiguan, and a seven-seater extended model.

No word on whether or not all the versions of the Tiguan will make it stateside.
