This bit of VW-related news may seem like a bit of a relief from their highly-covered “dieselgate” controversy involving select TDI models in the US market, and it is as Australia’s Motoring learned VW decided to ax the development of a new 10-speed DSG dual-clutch automatic.
After speaking to sources at Frankfurt, the outlet learned the original project for such a cog swapper, dating back from its launch at the 2013 Vienna Auto Symposium, is shelved because the project is too complex and expensive. It’ll certainly be expensive now, with the potential fines Volkswagen faces amid “dieselgate.”
“In the end, we had to balance what our priorities were with our transmissions and other things are more important and more urgent,” the sources said–they can say that again.
Originally, the plan was to introduce a new 10-speed DSG unit to replace the current six- and seven-speed versions in specific front-wheel drive and rear-wheel drive applications throughout Volkswagen AG’s vast portfolios.
Despite this cancellation, ZF is currently still pursuing their nine- and 10-speed boxes, with the niner already showing up in the new Land Rover Discovery as an example, while GM and Ford are currently developing their own nine- and 10-speed DSG automatic. Mercedes-Benz has had their nine-speed 9G-TRONIC available for some time already on select models.
Any more gears and they’ll have more than your average mountain bike.
