Recent images of the much-anticipated Fiat 124 Spider surfaced, providing us with a much more clear view of what to expect with the new Mazda-based sports car from Italy’s people’s car.
The car was reportedly spotted during an official photo shoot near Santa Barbara, California and is guessed to be a pre-production prototype. Either way, we can safely say we like what we see.
So far, from what we know, the new Fiat 124 is expected to be based on the latest Mazda Miata MX-5 thanks to an agreement between Mazda and Fiat-Chrysler Automobiles to build the compact roadster.
Of course, the Fiat itself features a body catered to fit the design language of the Italian automaker while playing slight homage to the original 1966 Fiat 124, first designed by Pininfarina.
Under the hood, we’re expecting Fiat’s latest 1.4L turbocharged engine with around 180hp while a faster Abarth version is also due to follow after the launch of the standard 124. Word is the Abarth version should get a detuned version of the same 1.75L turbocharged four-banger in the Alfa Romeo 4C.
Expect a debut at the Los Angeles Auto Show later this year.
