BMW’s thankfully kept their own front-wheel drive offerings in Europe and Asia only because here in America, everyone would just cringe at the idea of there being a front-wheel drive BMW–even though that’s basically what Minis are.
Aside from this, BMW enthusiast site, BMWBlog, reports Munich is working on a new dual-clutch automatic for front-wheel drive applications. This would not only be offered on BMW’s current front-wheel driven offerings across the pond, it would be equipped to future Minis as well.
Currently, front-wheel drive BMWs and Minis are offered with a six-speed manual from Getrag or an eight speed automatic from Aisin. The new DCT is expected to have seven forward gears.
Should all go well with the planning and development, BMW is said to have the new cog swapper ready within the next two years.
