Report: Jaguar downplays larger SUV and extended-wheelbase F-Pace

2017 Jaguar F-Pace

Some rumors apparently surfaced suggesting Jaguar was interested in a larger SUV and even an extended-wheelbase F-Pace to allow the Coventry-based automaker to better compete with their rivals from Germany and Japan in the luxury crossover segments.

However, according to Jaguar’s product chief, Kevin Stride, who spoke to Dutch outlet Autovisie, such rumors are false.

Stride said Jaguar plans to keep their crossover offerings confined to the F-Pace, which makes more sense than adding larger variants to the F-Pace. That’s because such a move could steal sales away from Jaguar’s corporate partner, Land Rover and could run the risk of virtually rendering SUVs like the Range Rover and Range Rover Sport completely irrelevant. And that’s a bit of a social and political no-no.

Additionally, as of now, Jaguar only plans to focus on the F-Pace since it’s the company’s first-ever crossover SUV, and that’s a big deal, especially when the car hasn’t even been launched yet. As a result, Jaguar is more interested in seeing how feedback on the F-Pace ends up and will decided how to carry on with their crossover efforts in the future.

Stride was also confident to say that the F-Pace’s current length and rear legroom are enough to satisfy those who might be interested in a long-wheelbase version, even those who are demanding this in China.
