The current seventh generation of Volkswagen Golf has been with us since 2012 and new reports are hailing to suggest an all-new eight-generation model could surface as early as late 2016.
According to AutoCar, the new Volkswagen Golf could also get a hybrid variant as well.
It’ll be built on an updated version of Volkswagen’s modular MQB platform, which also serves as a starting point for the Europe-only Skoda Octavia and SEAT Leon. It’ll be the same story for the next-gen versions of those models as well.
As for the hybrid, word is Volkswagen’s aiming for a fuel-economy rating of 50 mpg on the US rating system, and 60 mpg on the UK system.
Gas power would be supplied by a new 1.0L three-banger with a turbocharger and an electrically-driven supercharger, similarly to Volvo’s twin-charged engine. It’ll also have a recovery energy storage system using a lead-acid battery.
Other expected technology includes gesture control, similar to the new BMW 7-Series, as well as a fully-digital instrument cluster and a massive 13-inch touchscreen for the infotainment system and a smaller screen for the climate controls, similarly to Honda’s and Acura’s recent dual-screen setup.
