CarAdvice down yonder reports Toyota could be planning a hot version of its subcompact Yaris to compete with the likes of the Ford Fiesta ST and the Volkswagen Polo GTI.

The outlet received the bit of news after speaking with Toyota’s chief engineer and brand expert on sports cars, Tetsuya Tada.

Tada himself admitted Toyota’s lacking among the competition, mainly in the small hot hatchback class, where the Ford Fiesta ST and Volkswagen Polo GTI currently dominate. We may not exactly receive the Polo GTI, but we do get the Fiesta ST and it’s a favorite among us driving enthusiasts and journalist alike. And to see a hot version of the Yaris could prove well to add to Toyota’s appeal in the world of sports cars as they seek to improve their brand image in hopes of departing from their typical association to making beige slush mobiles for grandparents.

“We need a real hot hatch for the Toyota brand,” Tada told CarAdvice. “Because we, Toyota, already announced the comeback to WRC for 2017. Yaris, what do you think about Yaris? I must create a real hot hatch, real hot hatch of Toyota.”

With Tada mentioning Toyota’s newly announced involvement with the WRC season of 2017, there’s also a chance Toyota could be interested in producing a hot Yaris for the sake of homologation.

Tada of course didn’t disclose any specifics or details, but he did hint that this supposed hot Yaris could sport a big-turbo with its small four-cylinder engine. Also given the Yaris’ small footprint, it wouldn’t need much more to be a quick car.
