Report: The odd rendering of an apparent BMW concept was just a research vehicle

2015 Strange BMW-like Patent Drawings

Not too long ago, a photo rendering of what appeared to be a bastard child result of BMW i3 and a Toyota Mirai mating surfaced with rumors of it being a possible hydrogen-fuel cell concept from the Bavarian automaker.

But BMW apparently went on the record with BMWBlog to say the model and rendering was just an experimental concept vehicle being used for research purposes. Originally, the renderings were thought to be official designs submitted to the Chinese government for trademark purposes.

This happens to not be true, nor were these pictures indicative of any future i models, one of which is the anticipated i5 model, due to sit above the i3 as a larger, MPV-like version of the i3.

BMW is however known to be working with Toyota on several accounts–firstly, there’s their hotly anticipated successor to the Toyota Supra, while other reports indicate Toyota and BMW are collaborating on future hydrogen fuel-cell vehicles. From what we know, both Toyota and BMW will reveal new hydrogen fuel-cell vehicles of their own by the end of the decade, but both are said to share technology.
