You’ve been hearing me babble about that new Renault-related French sports car maker from the 1960s and ’70s, Alpine, and the successor to their famous A110 sports coupe. It’s famous because it swept the podium at the 1973 Monte Carlo Rally, or what was the first race to establish what we now know as the World Rally Championship.
The A110 was a purpose-built sports coupe built to meet the homologation requirements at the time of the 1973 Monte Carlo Rally. Now, it’s modern successor is here.
Revealed at a private event, Renault pulled the sheets off of its Alpine Vision concept and it’s pretty close to representing the production model. And my lord, is it a thing beauty.
Like the original Alpine A110, the new Apine Vision Concept is being built with the helpf of Renault, though they weren’t specific about what sits under the hood of the new Alpine Vision Concept. The original A110’s power came from Renault engines, a signature item for the model, so it would be hard to see or expect otherwise.
Speculation suggest power comes from a turbocharged 1.6L four-banger from the hot Renault Clio RS hatch. Others say that mill was reworked to displace 2.0L. Either way, the production model is said to come with a variety of power options, ranging from 250hp to as much as 300hp for the top-spec model.
The power will drive the rear wheels through a seven-speed dual-clutch box and is likely to be the only transmission offered, sadly.
Otherwise, some bits point to a production launch sometime within the second quarter of 2017, while Renault also has plans to expand the Alpine portfolio with a crossover and possibly, another Alpine-branded sports car.
I can’t wait to see the final A110 and it’s hard to say if it’ll come to US shores or not. Renault’s only slight presence here in the US is through Nissan and Infiniti, which the corporation owns. However, there haven’t been any indications of Renault really returning to the US. But we can only hope, for the sake of this Alpine Vision Concept.

“Motorsports and sports cars are deeply rooted in the DNA of Groupe Renault,” Groupe Renault Chairman and CEO Carlos Ghosn said. “Earlier this month we announced our return to Formula One with a Renault team, and today we are announcing Alpine. Alpine Vision is powered by a new 4 cylinder turbocharged engine, built by experts at Renault Sport, and its low weight will allow the car to achieve 0 to 100 km/h in less than 4.5 seconds – the target for the future production model.
Alpine will be managed by a small team of passionate experts within Groupe Renault, with one sole mission – to meet and exceed the expectations of the demanding sport premium customer. Michael van der Sande will lead as Alpine managing director, and Antony Villain will head Alpine design.

Over the next 12 months, the Alpine team will focus on building an outstanding car, very close to today’s show car in terms of design, weight, handling, agility and attention to detail. Priorities will also include building out the team and the network, and finally, to pursue racing. The current Signatech-Alpine Racing Team has already won two European endurance championships, and won the LMP2 class in the World Endurance Championship last year in Shanghai; and this year, the team will enter two Alpine LMP2 cars in the World Endurance Championship, including Le Mans.Made in Dieppe, France, the new Alpine will go on sale in 2017 initially in Europe, followed by other markets worldwide.
