The Maserati Levante is, of course, nothing new, especially since it was revealed at the 2016 Geneva Auto Show earlier this year. It has however showed up on US soil for the first time, fresh off the boat, to be showcased at the New York International Auto Show for its official US debut.
Like many of its ancestors before it, before Ellis Island even closed down, the Maserati Levante arrived in New York to show itself off to one of the most affluent cities in America. Not to mention, a new Italian in New York is as commonplace as pizza is to Brooklyn. So of course, I was interested, as was the rest of the automotive press.
Despite seeing it in pictures, I have to personally say the Levante looks much better in person and pictures don’t quite do it. I know, what am I saying, it’s a mumsy crossover for the affluent crowd, design to compete with the likes of the Porsche Cayenne and friends. But the Cayenne doesn’t suck and neither do many of its friends, and so we have little doubts for the Levante.
The US-spec Maserati Levante will come with the same Ferrari-developed 3.0L twin-turbocharged V6s as its platform siblings, the Ghibli and Quattroporte. This means either 350hp or 430hp, depending on which version you choose.
Adaptive suspension is standard for all models, which comes with a total of five programmable modes, depending on the vehicle’s driving situation and to the choosing of the driver. The idea is to offer up competent road-going performance, with 50/50 weight distribution and a mechanical self-locking rear differential as standard as well.
Prices start at $72,000 for the 350hp version while the 430hp variant begins at $83,000. Orders commence this spring with deliveries beginning in August.
