Volvo and Polestar have some great news! Well, actually semi-great. But we’ll get to that in a second…
First off, the Polestar S60 and V60 models have had their life and production numbers extended, however, at a cost, in some sense.
So here’s what’s happened. In the original Polestar S60 and V60 duo, the heart was a turbocharged 3.0L inline-six from Ford, massaged to produce 350hp. Now, that engine’s been replaced, serving up more power, but with less cylinders and bigger turbos. That’s the drawback I speak of because, well, I don’t really like four-cylinder engines and the inline-six was a peach.
There’s also a loss of torque, because, there’s just no replacement for displacement. Horsepower has now been boosted to 367hp however, thanks to a new twin-charged (supercharged and turbocharged in Volvo-speak) 2.0L Drive-E four-banger. It’s also been mated to an all-new eight-speed Geartronic automatic, tuned specificlaly by Polestar themselves.
The BorgWarner-sourced all-wheel drive system remains.
Despite the hike in horsepower, the deficit in torque takes its toll as the 0-62 time also drops to 4.7 seconds, from 4.5 for the six-cylinder model. Also, Volvo and Polestar had to enact some more weight reduction to compensate.
So yes, this is kind of a step backwards for the S60 and V60 Polestar. But depending on how you look at it, this is good because Volvo is making more of them. It’s bad for the second market as the six-cylinder ones are likely to be the ones that are more desired, driving up their price.
Whatever, I’m blabbering. The world needs more Polestar Volvos!
