Despite the continuous war against fuel consumption and the push for more conservative driving practices, Americans did almost exactly the opposite by racking up a total of nearly 3.15 trillion miles traveled in the year 2015. Not exactly surprising, since we take our ability to move freely with pride and exercise our right to drive about.
That’s a lot of miles traveled.
The Federal Highway Administration revealed their annual study regarding how many miles were documented over the year with around 260 million registered vehicles on the road in the US.
The cause for such an increase in total mileage traveled in the US however can be attributed to the fact that there are more people on the road from booms in car sales from 2014. With that being said it should also be no surprise that traffic incidents also statistically increased for a certain period, simply due to the relation of there being more vehicles on the road than previously recorded.
But in a greater context, traffic deaths are still 40% lower than when record levels were recorded in the 1970s.
The study was conducted by research firm Polk, who is based in Detroit.
