General Motors and Buick tried to make an affordable, compact near-luxury sedan and it was called the Verano and it had a starting price in the low twenty-thousands. Though when fully equipped, it cost nearly as much as some equally well-equipped midsize family sedans, like the Honda Accord and the Toyota Camry. And when you’re playing in that league, you better have your A-game.
Buick surprisingly did have its A-Game and thus, strangely, word is from AutomotiveNews is that GM could force the company to end the model’s production as early as 2017, but it’s not from slow sales. The Verano is currently the company’s second best-selling sedan.
Instead, the car is rather perceived as obsolete because buyers have been opting more for crossovers, such as the Buick Encore. Not to mention, because of cheap gas, Buick anticipates buyers will spring more for the Enclave and the Envision when they launch in the near-future. Additionally, the affordable prices of Buick’s crossovers make it easy for buyers to just upgrade from the sedan at minimal cost.
So similarly to how “video killed the radio star,” crossovers killed the sedan.
