Chevrolet’s sixth-generation Camaro is just about to be launched at dealers and thus, some questions are beginning to arise regarding the specialized, high-performance versions and what to expect, specifically with the next Z/28.

According to MotorTrend, speculation suggests the next-gen Z/28 could get a revised version of the 7.0L LS7 V8 from the last Camaro Z/28, giving it the new name, “LT7.” The Ls7 was also the original motor from the previous generation Chevrolet Corvette Z06.

In its latest form as the “LT7,” rumors say the new Z/28 could get as much as 540 or 565hp with the latest variant, when compared to the previous model’s 505hp. The extra power might be provided by the use of direct-injection, redesigned cylinder heads and valvetrain components, and even a flat-plane crank to compete more closely with the Ford Mustang GT350R.

Nonetheless, a Z/28 is on the way as a test mule was spotted on the Nurburgring, though it suffered a bit of trouble after spinning and crashing into a guardrail while testing.
