The BMW 2002 Hommage Concept is Munich’s attempt to pay tribute to the original 2002tii

2016 BMW 2002 Hommage Concept

BMW’s been on a roll with showcasing some interesting, but “love-it-or-hate-it” “Hommage” concepts, which pay tribute to some of the most famous cars the company’s ever produced over its las 100 years of existence.

Oh yea, if you’ve been living under a rock lately, BMW’s celebrating their first centennial this year as they celebrate their first 100 years ever, since being founded and established in 1916.

Helping to highlight this achievement, BMW’s been producing some one-off concepts that try and capture the beauty and soul of the original models from the past, by bringing them up to snuff for the 21st century. However, as much as these concepts represent what dreams are made of, in this case, BMW taking one of their original models and reviving it for present day, some of them have left us feeling a bit underwhelmed and yearning for more.

This latest 2002 Hommage Concept, really is no different.

Based off of the latest M2, and basically given a really wicked custom-made bodykit, designed to envision what a 2002 Turbo would look like in 2016, the 2002 isn’t what I’d personally call a looker.

The design overall lacks cohesion and the gaping shovel-like front fascia doesn’t help the car’s overall design either. Admittedly, trying to reimagine the 2002 Turbo while maintaining its signature and distinctive three-box design, is hard to replicate and modernize today, given how new cars are infatuated with busy angles and curves that don’t seem to exist for any particular reason. And that’s a bit of a shame, since the 2002’s original design was strictly form following function. In other words, there’s a reason why the 2002 looks the way it does, and it has to do with the function of the body for the sake of aerodynamics and practical proportions.

This 2002 Homage Concept, not so much. And I had a similar opinion with the 3.0CSL Hommage Concept as well. Some loved it, but I wasn’t exactly thrilled by it because, well, it just seemed to be totally overdone for the sake of aesthetic pleasure, instead of actually being a functional piece of bodywork.

So if you were to ask me if I like the new 2002 Hommage Concept or not, the answer would be no.
