Recalls: Ford expands Takata recall by adding 1.9 million cars in North America to recall

Ford Fusion

Honda isn’t the only company suffering from the massive Takata airbag recall as Ford is also a heavy user of the airbags now found to be defective. Similarly to Honda and Toyota, who expanded their campaign to include more models, Ford announced to be adding around 1.9 million cars to their own recall group. That almost amounts to nearly ever model affected on their designated recall list.

The issue still stems from moisture contaminating the the propellant used in the inflators and thus, without a desiccant, or basically the same stuff that you find in packaging for new consumer products–you know, those tiny “silica gel” packets with tiny seemingly plastic balls in them that at first, appear to have no purpose–over time, moisture can breakdown the propellant, leading to the deadly occurrence of turning your airbag into a frag grenade to the face.

So far, investigators are blaming the faulty airbags for around 13 deaths worldwide and over 100 injuries. The NHTSA issued its massive recall in May, calling for the replacement of 35 million to 40 million non-desiccated inflators, invinv cars from Subaru, Mazda, Fiat-Chrysler Automobiles, Nissan, Honda, Ferrari, Toyota, and Mitsubishi. All the automakers are scheduled to issue their own recall statement.
