Over the past 12 hours or so, reports and Tweets have been ringing in about Lexus owners experiencing a BSOD-like blackout of their sat-nav systems for reasons unknown.
The reports mainly come in on Lexus’ Twitter account, which has been inundated from tons of owners taking their complaints to the Twitter-sphere about the total blackout. I mean, it is kind of a big deal when one of the most expensive components integrated into your car goes completely caput.
And it’s not just the sat-nav portion that’s going haywire, especially when interestingly, the U.S. Military admitted that there will be GPS outages on the West Coast due to “secret testing.” It’s the whole system, as you can see in some of the tweets after the jump.
@Lexus this is my current situation. Nothing works and from that email doesn’t sound like dealer can do anything yet http://pic.twitter.com/2kEVxjFX8O

After some detective work on their own, Lexus later then tweeted that the issue was isolated to a buggy and faulty OTA (over-the-air) update, the same kinda of updates sent by Tesla to their customers’ cars, over wireless satellite connections.
Many of our owner’s vehicle head units stopped working. We are working around the clock to find a solution. Stay tuned for more information

Update: We apologize if your vehicle has experienced an error in the navigation head unit. http://pic.twitter.com/TVzch62Emm

This led to just a constant boot-loop, similarly to how smartphones can be bricked from bad software updates or corruption. So is there a fix? Yes, yes there is. But it required you to take a run down to your local dealer, where they’ll do a hard reset of the system while confirming the function of the system. Otherwise, there’s no other option. The dealership will be complimentary.
