Report: Volkswagen plans three platforms to spawn 30 EVs by 2025

2016 Volkswagen Budd-e Concept

Volkswagen might be getting constantly kicked down for their Dieselgate scandal, but that’s not stopping them from shifting all of their efforts to produce more electric vehicles.

In fact, Volkswagen AG’s plans are so ambitious, AutomotiveNews reports VW could produce as many as 30 different EV models by 2025, which is becoming a possibility thanks to the development of three new platforms.

This seems like a move to counteract all of the negative happenings from the Dieselgate issue and in all truthness, that’s what it appears to really be. The program has been coined, “Strategy 2025,” and the plan was recently outlined at one of Michigan’s CAR Management Briefing Seminars, by Volkswagen Group of America’s chief engineer, Matthais Erb.

So far, Volkswagen’s latest progress is with the MEB platform, or the Modular Electric Toolkit if translated loosely into English. This MEB platform is destined to serve as a backbone for the incoming production Budd-e. That Budd-e was originally revealed at the Consumer Electronics Show this past January, boasting a range of 233 miles on a full charge.

From this, Volkswagen is virtually putting all their eggs in one basket, the EV one, since their reputation for diesel is now next to nothing following the emissions scandal.
