Motorsports: The world’s first all-electric racing series, Formula E will show up in Brooklyn

2016 - FIA Formula E Announcement NYC

One of the first races for Formula E will run through the Red Hook neighborhood of Brooklyn.

If you’re New York City based like we are, or at least within its proper, some exciting motorsports news rings in from the side of Formula E.

What is essentially Formula 1, except with all-electric powertrains, Formula E is the world’s first fully-electric racing series. It officially announced a new city street circuit in the heart of Brooklyn.

Consisting of a 1.21-mile track through Red Hook, Brooklyn, the course zips by Pier 11 and by Brooklyn Cruise Terminal. With lower Manhattan, the Statue of Liberty, and the Brooklyn Bridge all visible within the track’s limits, spectators will have both a great view and a great competition to see.

There are a total of 13 turns.

This event marks one of the first major league race courses to happen in recent New York history. Both Formula E and Mayor Bill De Blasio agreed to the race to exemplify New York’s prime status as a worldly location for large events. There are also high expectations for an increase in tourism for the city.

“I’m really excited to be racing in New York City,” said Andretti Formula E team owner Michael Andretti. “To organise a race in this market is a huge accomplishment for Formula E and everyone involved. As an American team competing in the FIA Formula E Championship, it’s going to be great to showcase this sport and all that Formula E represents to our home country audience. It’s going to be incredible watching the MS Amlin Andretti race cars compete on this circuit with the New York skyline in the background.”
