Report: Mini’s still working on a production Superleggera Concept

The Mini Superleggera Concept has been stuck in a lull as the higher-ups still haven’t made their decision as to whether to produce the car or not.

AutoCar learned however that they’re still working on it after speaking with BMW Board Member, Peter Schwarzenbauer, who confirmed that a production model is still being developed.

“We are now working hard to get it on the street, he told AutoCar. “It’s an economically challenging project and there is no firm decision, but we have a lot of people here that are fighting for it.”

So basically, they’re challenged by the hurdle of making it into a solid business case for BMW executives to approve. Should all go well, the production Mini Superleggera is still slated to ride on the same UKL platform as Mini’s entire lineup, along with a range of three- and four-banger gas engines with some diesel options.

A plug-in hybrid version is even on the table for possibility, sporting the same 1.5L TwinPower Turbo three-banger as the 2-Series Active Tourer plug-in hybrid, with 133hp and 162 lb-ft of twist with an electric motor producing 85hp and 122 lb-ft. The gas power should go to the front wheels while the electric motor powers the rear.

If approved, the Superleggera should hit showrooms sometime in 2019 to take on the Mazda Miata MX-5.
