Autocar magazine 19 August preview

Aston Martin DB11 scooped; Porsche 911 GT3 RS road test; 400 miles in an Aston Martin DB9 GT; Drifting with Ken Block

This week's issue of Autocar, dated 19 August, is something of an occassion, because it's not every day we hand out a coveted five-star road test verdict.

Yet Porsche's new 911 GT3 RS has received just that, and our experienced testers put the new £131,296 sports car through its paces in our eight-page road test. Should Ferrari, Aston Martin and McLaren be worried by the 493bhp GT3 RS? The answer turns out to be simple: Yes.

Also driven in this issue:

Jaguar XF - Jaguar's second-generation XF is lighter, faster and even more refined than the original.

Vuhl 05 - Mexican sports car company produces a convincing effort first time out.

Jeep Cherokee - New 2.2-litre diesel engine improves our experience of Jeep's large SUV.

Autocar's news section this week is lead by our full scoop on the Aston Martin DB11. Aston's replacement for the DB9 is due to arrive in 2016, and will be the first Aston Martin to use the company's new platform. It'll receive an AMG-derived V8 engine, but purists needn't worry as there will be the option of a V12, too.

Speaking of the DB9, Matt Prior takes the final incarnation of Aston Martin's staple supercar, the DB9 GT, on a 400-mile trip to see if time has helped or hindered this modern motoring icon. We also journey to Silverstone to meet drifting legend Ken Block and his latest daily driver, the 850bhp Hoonicorn.

We've also got all the latest news from the Pebble Beach Concours in the US, including the latest pictures of Hyundai's Vision G concept, and the BMW 3.0 CSL Hommage R.

Our long-term test fleet gets a new member this week, as we take delivery of a brand new Mazda MX-5. We already know Mazda's fourth-generation roadster is great to drive, but what's it like to live with? We're about to find out.

Elsewhere, James Ruppert wonder whether rust has become a problem of the past, and Mark Pearson selects the best hot hatchbacks from £2000.
