2015 BMW 7 Series revealed - pictures, on-sale date and engine information

BMW’s sixth-generation 7 Series saloon has been revealed, and will be the cleanest and most luxurious yet

The 2015 BMW 7 Series has renewed the brand’s assault on the luxury class.

Set to go on sale in the UK on 24 October, the upmarket saloon has been comprehensively re-engineered in a move that sees it shed up to 130kg over its predecessor through the adoption of a new hybrid construction process that uses varying forms of carbonfibre in load-bearing areas of its body structure.

Further developments include newly developed in-line six-cylinder petrol and diesel engines and a plug-in hybrid model with an electric range of up to 25 miles. The 7 Series also gets a heavily reworked chassis that combines four-wheel steering with four-wheel drive for the first time, a remote parking system that allows you to step out of the car before it parks itself and a series of new iDrive control functions, including both touch and gesture controls that allow the driver to deliver commands with a wave of the hand.

The new 7 Series, codenamed G11 (short wheelbase) and G12 (long wheelbase), maintains the visual identity of the previous-generation model. The traditional three-box silhouette is retained, albeit with a slightly more raked rear window and a more heavily sloping boot lid that serve to provide it with a sleeker profile.

Among the detail changes are a more prominent kidney grille with flaps that open to increase airflow to the engine bay when required, larger LED headlights (with optional laser high beams from the i8), a more heavily structured front bumper with integral LED foglights and a more heavily contoured bonnet.

Along the flanks there is now a more pronounced shoulder, a taller glasshouse and a chrome highlight that runs from the air breather behind the front wheel arches and along the lower edges of the doors. The rear is distinguished by a high-set boot, traditional L-shaped tail-lights joined by a chrome strip and tail pipes set within the rear valance panel.

BMW has also developed four different styling packages for the new car: standard, M Sport, Pure Excellence and Individual.

At 5098mm in length, 1902mm in width and 1478mm in height, the new 7 Series is 19mm longer and 7mm higher than its predecessor in standard wheelbase guise, although it is the same width as before. The long-wheelbase variant gains an added 139mm in length, making it 18mm longer than the car it replaces, at 5238mm.

Both the standard and long-wheelbase variants share the same wheelbase measurements as the old 7 Series models, at 3070mm and 3210mm respectively. The front track has increased by 7mm in width at 1618mm, while the rear track is reduced by 4mm at 1646mm.

As with the exterior, the interior receives an evolutionary design update with a newly designed dashboard, controls and trims. Among the highlights are new digital instrument graphics that light up in either white, blue or red depending on the driving mode, a redesigned multi-function steering wheel and new front seats with ventilation and massage functions.

A long list of interior options includes items such as a heat comfort package which not only includes the seats and steering wheel but also the armrests in the doors, centre console and rear centre armrest. There is also a high-end Bowers and Wilkins surround-sound system, night vision, a glass roof that can be switched between six colours, inductive mobile phone charging and a head-up display featuring a 75% larger screen than before.

The big news is the appearance of a fifth-generation iDrive system. The significantly reworked set-up introduces new touchpad and touchscreen functions as part of an optional Navigation System Professional, allowing you to operate the various functions in a similar style to that of a smart phone with familiar pinch, point and swipe commands, or alternatively in a traditional manner via an updated rotary dial mounted on the car’s broad centre console.

There’s also optional gesture control for the first time. It uses a three-dimensional sensor mounted within the headlining to detect hand movements that are used to control functions including the volume of the audio system as well as the acceptance or rejection of calls. The new system detects five different gestures, including clamp, point, rotate, swipe and a two-finger command.

BMW’s new 7 Series will be launched with the choice of just two engines in the UK, both mated to a standard eight-speed automatic gearbox that uses a longer final drive ratio and a shift strategy that operates in conjunction with the satellite navigation system. Buyers can choose a Steptronic variant of the ZF-produced gearbox with shift paddles on the steering wheel as an option. It uses its own unique software mapping for sportier shifts and an integral launch control function.

The expected volume seller in the UK is the 730d, which receives BMW’s new B57 engine. The turbocharged 3.0-litre six-cylinder unit uses a new injector system that operates at 2500bar. It develops 7bhp and 45lb ft more than the N57-designated engine it replaces, with 261bhp and 457lb ft.

This is sufficient to provide the only diesel-powered model in the initial line-up with a 0-62mph time of 5.8sec and a 155mph top speed. BMW claims that it also brings an impressive 12.4mpg improvement in fuel consumption, at 62.8mpg, and a 29g/km reduction in CO2 emissions, at 119g/km.

The petrol engine is a new turbocharged 3.0-litre in line six-cylinder, the B58, which powers the 740Li. With 321bhp and 332lb ft, it delivers 6bhp and the same torque as the older N55 unit, endowing it with a 0-62mph time of 5.5sec and 155mph top speed along with combined fuel consumption of 42.8mpg and 154g/km of CO2.

In the first half of 2016, BMW will also provide the 7 Series with a plug-in hybrid petrol-electric system in a new 740e model. Already employed in the X5 xDrive40e, it uses BMW’s new B48 turbocharged 2.0-litre four-cylinder petrol engine and an electric motor mounted within the gearbox to provide a combined output of 321bhp, 0-62mph in 5.6sec and a 149mph top speed in hybrid mode.

In electric mode, it is claimed to provide a zero-emission range of up to 25 miles at speeds of up to 75mph. The new 740e is rated at 134.5mpg, with average CO2 emissions of just 49g/km.

The twin-turbocharged 4.4-litre V8 petrol unit will appear next year in the 750i Xdrive. The 90deg engine delivers 444bhp but, through a series of upgrades that include new twin-scroll turbochargers and a higher 10.5:1 compression ratio, it now provides an added 37lb ft of torque at 479lb ft. This gives the range-topping 7 Series a 0-62mph time of 4.4sec, a 155mph top speed, combined fuel consumption of 34.9mpg and CO2 emissions of 189g/km. A twin-turbo 6.0-litre V12 twin turbo is also set to join the 7 Series range later in its life. The V8 and the V12 are also set to be used by Rolls-Royce.

To further boost the model’s presence in the luxury performance market, BMW is looking at creating a new M7 or M750i M Performance version, likely to receive a heavily tuned version of the M5’s twin-turbo 4.4-litre V8 producing more than 600bhp.

All engines come as standard with an enhanced Drive Experience Control function, allowing the driver to choose between Comfort, Sport, Eco-Pro and a new adaptive mode that monitors your driving and automatically adjusts the car to suit. As in other recent new BMWs, the brake energy regeneration and automatic start-stop systems are complemented by a fuel-saving coasting function which decouples the engine on a periods of trailing throttle at speeds between 31 and 100mph.

All versions come with rear-wheel drive as standard. However, the optional four-wheel drive adds 70kg to the kerb weight.

The new 7 Series rides on a heavily reworked suspension system. It adopts air springs front and rear, rather than just at the rear as previously, providing constantly variable damping control, automatic self-levelling and the ability to alter the nominal 135mm ride height on the go. The driver can raise ground clearance by 20mm at the press of a button at speeds below 22mph, while in Sport mode the ride height is automatically reduced by 10mm at certain speeds for improved aerodynamic efficiency.

The new car also comes with optional electro-hydraulically operated roll bars as part of the Executive Drive Pro function on all but the 740i and 740e. They replace the previous hydraulically operated roll bars, bringing what BMW describes as faster damper reaction times for improved ride comfort, a more progressive build-up of lean and reduced levels of body roll.

As part of BMW’s weight-saving efforts, the wheel carriers, brake caliper housings, brake disc carriers and rear transverse suspension arms are all made of aluminium. Altogether some 40kg has been saved over the old 7 Series, bringing an impressive 10kg reduction in un-sprung mass at each corner. BMW also claims a perfect 50/50 front/rear weight distribution, while the efforts to trim weight within the body structure have also reduced the centre of gravity.

Allied to the new suspension is a new electro-mechanical steering system. The new 7 Series also offers an optional rear-wheel steer function on both rear and four-wheel-drive models. It provides up to 3deg of countersteer for added manoeuvrability around town, or alternatively 2deg of parallel steer for greater agility on the open road.

In what BMW is billing as a world first, the new 7 Series is capable of parking itself without the need for a driver to be behind the steering wheel. The so-called Remote Control Parking function uses a stereo camera mounted within the windscreen and radar sensors to allow forwards and reverse parking manoeuvres at the press of a button on the new digital key fob.

The 7 Series will cost from £64,530 in the UK for the 730d in short-wheelbase form and in standard trim. The petrol range starts at £72,060. Upgrading to M Sport trim puts £3650 onto the price, while long-wheelbase models add £3950 and xDrive models are £2730 more expensive.

Among the key rivals for BMW's 7 Series will be the new Audi A8, which has also been spotted testing, and the latest Mercedes-Benz S-Class.

2016 Toyota Prius unveiled

Sharp new chassis, Mirai-inspired styling and even better economy for Toyota’s hybrid hatchback

Toyota is adopting styling cues from the Mirai fuel-cell vehicle for the latest generation of its Prius hybrid, which has been unveiled at the Frankfurt motor show.

The fourth generation of the Prius marks a significant step for Toyota. It is the first model to be developed on the firm’s Toyota New Global Architecture (TNGA) platform, a modular set of components designed to offer quicker development of new models as well as cost savings and improved margins across the product line-up.

The new platform brings a more sophisticated chassis than that of the outgoing Prius. Double wishbone rear suspension replaces the current torsion beam layout, accompanying a revised MacPherson set-up at the front.

Toyota says the new platform helps to lower the centre of gravity and that this will give the Prius “improved handling response and agility”.

The front of the Prius gets more dramatic headlights and complex surfacing on the bumper, while the side profile is helped by a blacked-out C-pillar that’s designed to create a ‘floating roof’. The rear has clear cues from the Mirai, including the deep crease above the back wheels, tall tail-lights and a spoiler integrated into the hatchback glass.

Toyota hasn’t issued any technical details, but the front and rear overhangs look slightly longer than those on the current car, so the new Prius is likely to be slightly longer overall. The powertrain is almost certain to be an updated version of the existing combination of 1.8-litre petrol engine and electric motor, featuring a more compact nickel-metal hydride battery pack that’s quicker to charge.

Senior officials have hinted at fuel economy gains of 10%. That could give the Prius a combined economy figure of around 82mpg, potentially taking the regular, non-plug-in version of the car to less than 80g/km of CO2 emissions.

The TNGA will play a key part in Toyota’s future product plans. The firm has previously stated that up to 50% of its global product line-up will eventually switch to the new architecture and that it will offer gains in body rigidity of between 30% and 65%.

The new Prius is due on sale early next year. Prices are likely to stay broadly in line with the current car’s, with a starting figure of around £22,000.

Comment - Why the new Prius matters

Toyota may make great claims about the high percentage of Auris hybrids in the overall sales mix and the enthusiastic response to the Mirai fuel cell vehicle, but the Prius is likely to remain the flag-bearer for the company’s hybrid powertrains for some time to come.

So successful has the model been that for many people, Prius is hybrid.

Don’t expect a revolution in the powertrain technology that underpins the new car — although even modest gains should be enough for the Prius to trump the NEDC efficiency test and get under the magic 80g/km CO2 mark.

The chassis is the most interesting bit. Everything from Avensis to Auris and lots in between will use the TNGA platform in the years ahead, so the Prius will give us our first look at how Toyota’s vision of a global platform compares with the VW Group’s complex (and expensive) MQB.

Renault boss Carlos Ghosn admits F1 divorce with Red Bull is close

The fractious relationship between Red Bull and Renault is likely to be annulled soon, paving the way for the French firm to become a team owner

Renault boss Carlos Ghosn has confirmed the manufacturer is “renegotiating” its contract with the Red Bull F1 team - with a view to ending supply of customer engines to any teams as soon as possible.

“We are analysing what to do,” Ghosn told Autocar. “We have been clear in saying ‘don't count on us as a provider of engines’. It is clear that if you provide engines you aren’t mentioned when you win and you are criticised when you have problems.”

Red Bull and Renault have a contract until the end of the 2016 season, but both sides are reportedly trying to end the alliance at the close of this season. The fact Ghosn admits the contract is being renegotiated is the first public confirmation of the much-vaunted split.

“Our future is the subject of detailed analysis and renegotiating. We will either exit or run our own team. We don't have a clear decision yet,” he said.

Ghosn's comments all but confirm the end of the firm's alliance with Red Bull, which yielded four successive drivers' and constructors' titles but which has turned sour over the past two seasons.

Asked if repeated attacks on Renault by Red Bull bosses were fair, he said: “It is not a question of fair, it is a question of sportsmanship. A team should win and lose together. What has been said is a question of sportsmanship. Again I say, you should win and lose together.”

Renault's final decision on F1 engine supply has wide-ranging implications for the sport, with Mercedes, Ferrari and Honda the only confirmed engine suppliers.

2015 Kia Cee'd facelift revealed

Facelifted Kia hatchback will go on sale in October featuring minor styling changes and an improved range of engines

The facelifted Kia Cee’d has been revealed and will go on sale in the UK this October.

Kia has released full details of its comprehensive mid-life facelift for the Cee’d hatchback, which is on display at the Frankfurt motor show.

Styling changes include reprofiled front and rear bumpers with new chrome trim and grille mesh, and new LED light clusters at the rear.

New engine options for the Cee’d include Kia’s three-cylinder 1.0-litre ecoTurbo. Developed in-house at the firm’s Namyang R&D centre in Korea, the 1.0-litre engine develops 98bhp and 127lb ft. A higher-powered 118bhp version will also be available.

Kia has also upgraded the Cee’d’s diesel engine range, including the 1.6-litre CRDi, which is the most popular option in Europe. Emissions of C02 for the engine have fallen to 94g/km when fitted with Kia’s stop-start system.

The higher-powered 1.6-litre CRDi has also been upgraded and now produces 134bhp (up from 126bhp) and 210lb ft. This engine will be available with Kia’s new seven-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission, which replaces the firm’s older six-speed torque-converter automatic. Equipped with this new transmission, the 1.6-litre diesel emits 109g/km of CO2.

Both the 1.0-litre engine and the seven-speed dual-clutch automatic were seen at the Geneva motor show back in March.

The existing 1.6 and 1.4-litre petrol engines remain unchanged, as does the current 1.4-litre diesel.

To improve the upgraded car’s ride and handling and reduce noise and vibrations, Kia says it has fitted a new torque vectoring system and tuned the car’s chassis and suspension.

Inside, the facelifted Cee’d receives some minor trim upgrades, including new materials for the centre console, while diesel models get improved sound-proofing.

As well as receiving Kia’s latest infotainment software, the Cee’d also gets Kia Connected Services, which allows live information updates, such as traffic and speed camera alerts, to be displayed.

The Cee’d’s suite of safety technology now also includes a speed limit information function, blind spot monitoring and an upgraded park assist system.

The higher-powered Cee’d GT and Procee'd GT have also been upgraded, with both receiving minor styling updates inside and out. A new sound symposer is said to enhance the engine’s natural note inside the cabin, while the 201bhp 1.6-litre T-GDi engine used by both the GT and the Procee'd GT receives a new turbocharger, which drops both cars' 0-62mph time to 7.6sec while reducing CO2 emissions to 170g/km.

As with the current range, the facelifted Cee’d line-up incorporates the hatchback, Sportswagon and the three-door Procee'd. Official pricing and specifications will be confirmed closer to the car's launch. Pricing is expected to increase only slightly from that of the current car, which starts at £14,305.

An all-new version of the Cee'd is scheduled to be launched in 2017 and has already been spotted testing.

Facelifted DS4 unveiled at Frankfurt

Revised DS 4 hatch has been joined by a new Crossback variant and a line-up of refreshed engines

PSA Peugeot Citroën’s DS brand has given the DS 4 a major makeover. The model gains a freshly styled nose, new headlights with xenon and LED technology, a freshened engine line-up and more paint and trim options.

In addition, DS has created two models out of one. In place of the original single variant, there’s now a choice of two distinct versions: the standard-issue five-door hatchback, which has a normal ride height; and the new Crossback, which rides 30mm higher and has more rugged styling, including larger wheels, cosmetic skidplates and roof bars.

Both versions of the new 4 will be front-wheel drive only and the engine range is made up of three turbocharged petrol engines and three diesel motors. A six-speed manual gearbox and a six-speed torque-converter automatic are the two transmission options.

In the UK, the Crossback will be available with one trim level and a choice of two engines.

Blog: Is DS heading in the right direction?

Eric Apode, vice president for products and business development at DS, said the new 4 line-up is intended to compete with “established premium C-segment cars such as the Audi A3, BMW 1 Series and Volvo V40”.

Apode added that crossovers based on premium C-segment cars were now accounting for 30% of sales, with the traditional hatchbacks dropping from 50 to 40% of sales. This market shift was the inspiration behind the decision to build the Crossback, he said.

As well as getting the new DS family face, more exterior chrome trim and significantly improved headlights, the new 4 gets a new 7.0in colour touchscreen, which allows “two-thirds of the dashboard switches” to be removed.

Options include CarPlay for compatibility with iPhones, mirroring for Apple and Android mobile phones as well as the ‘DS Connect’ system, blind spot warning, keyless entry, a reversing camera, massage seats and an upmarket Denon hi-fi.

The 4 also now has the option of four roof colours and nine body colours, which adds up to 38 different combinations. Nappa leather door panels and semi-aniline leather trim are again optional. Both versions get a ‘wrap-over’ windscreen as standard.

For the hatch, the entry-level engine is the 119g/km turbocharged petrol Pure Tech 130 S&S unit, which offers 128bhp and 170lb ft from 1750rpm and is hooked up to the manual ’box.

The 130g/km THP 165 petrol engine has 177lb ft from 1400rpm. Top of the petrol range is the 138g/km THP 210 variant. There are three diesels, all tagged Blue HDi. They come in 120 (100g/km), 150 (103g/km) and 180 (115g/km) guises. The 180 unit delivers 295lb ft of torque and comes with the auto gearbox as standard.

In the UK, the Crossback will be offered with only the Pure Tech 130 engine and manual ’box or the Blue HDi 120 with either the manual or auto.

The new 4 made its debut at the 2015 Frankfurt motor show. Prices will start at £19,500 for the entry-level Pure Tech 130 manual model, rising to around £25,500 for the range-topping Blue HDi 180. The new 4 goes on sale in the UK from November.

The company says it has sold 115,000 DS 4s since the car was launched in 2011. That makes up around 20% of all DS models sold since the brand was introduced with the DS 3 hatchback in 2009.

Bentley working on quicker, hotter Bentayga Speed SUV

Crewe manufacturer's tech chief doesn't rule out more focused variants of new SUV after aggressive-looking mule is spied testing

Bentley chiefs at the Frankfurt motor show have dropped a major hint that a high-performance version of its new Bentayga is in the works.

Speculation that a more focused variant of the SUV, possibly carrying the Bentayga Speed name, was being prepared arose after a new version of the car was spied testing.

At the Frankfurt show, Bentley engineering boss Rolf Frech has explained that the standard Bentayga will not become the world’s first 200mph SUV because of the wide safety margins the company chooses for its tyres.

“But that is not to say there will not be other variants in the future,” he hinted. Asked whether that could indicate a Bentayga Speed wearing more sporting rubber, he said: “Never say never”.

The version of the car seen in the spy pictures differed from earlier Bentayga test mules because it featured a different front bumper incorporating larger air intakes and a lower air splitter, plus a small spoiler mounted at the top of the hatchback and more aggressive side skirts.

Our photographers also reported that the car sounded considerably more aggressive than other test cars, an indication that it featured a more sporty exhaust set-up.

2016 Toyota C-HR - updated concept revealed

Revised version of Juke-rivalling hatchback makes its debut at Frankfurt show, with two rear doors and hybrid power

Toyota has unveiled a revised version of its C-HR concept at the Frankfurt motor show, previewing a Nissan Juke rival that's set to make its public debut next spring.

The Japanese brand first showed its idea of a small crossover at the Paris motor show last autumn; now it has tweaked that concept's looks to produce a vehicle that's said to be much closer to the final production version. The final model should appear at the Geneva show in spring 2016, with sales starting before next summer.

The biggest difference between the latest concept and the original is the addition of a pair of rear doors - a sign that, like the Juke, the production version of the car is likely to be offered as a five-door only. Much of the original show car's complex surfacing has been retained, however, along with a sloping rear roofline that's designed to give it a more sporting stance.

The C-HR will be made on Toyota's TNGA (Toyota New Generation Architecture) platform, which is making its production-car debut at Frankfurt underneath the latest-generation of Prius. Toyota has also confirmed that it will be offered as a hybrid; the firm claims this it will be the first hybrid model in its class, although it does not state whether conventionally powered versions of the C-HR will also be available.

Recent spy shots have shown two different prototypes of the same crossover testing on different continents. Both cars confirmed that the C-HR's two-door coupe style had been translated into a four-door layout.

The C-HR is expected to be powered a four-cylinder powerplant and CVT gearbox, sitting above the RAV4 in Toyota's range. It's expected to be the same size as a Nissan Juke but offer interior space that rivals the Qashqai's.

Potential customers are
said to have favoured the concept’s looks over more traditional interpretations of crossover themes.

The C-HR’s looks were created in response to a demand from company boss Akio Toyoda for Toyota’s designers to be more adventurous. Recent designs for Lexus, Toyota’s luxury brand, have shown the initial response to that demand.

Rumours suggest the crossover could be called Auris Cross, although there has been no official confirmation of this. It was first spied testing in Germany around 18 months ago.

Peugeot Fractal concept revealed at Frankfurt motor show

Fractal EV concept showcases Peugeot’s latest cutting-edge interior and sound symposer safety system

Peugeot has revealed the second generation of its i-Cockpit interior design language with this Fractal concept at the Frankfurt motor show.

The two-door, four-seat concept, described as an ‘urban coupé’, is powered by two 168bhp electric motors - one located on each axle - with a combined output of 335bhp.

Peugeot says the concept has a range of up to 280 miles on a single charge. The motors are fed from a lithium ion battery pack mounted in the centre of the car.Measuring 3.81m long by 1.77m wide, the concept, which features a removable roof, sits on 19in ‘Tall&Narrow’ wheels and weighs just 1000kg. Peugeot says the Fractal can hit 62mph from rest in 6.8sec.

The minimalist cabin features a small steering wheel with integrated touchpads that can be used to control most infotainment functions. The 7.7in holographic head-up display and 12.3in digital instrument cluster can be customised by the driver.

Switches either side of the driver control the electric drivetrain, while another 7.7in touchscreen forms part of the centre console.

Peugeot says more than 80% of the interior has been created using 3D-printed components. The design was inspired by the materials and surfaces used in auditoriums and recording studios.

The Fractal features a next-generation sound system, which Peugeot says can create the illusion of direction with sound, such as when delivering navigation instructions. The seats of the concept feature a ‘tactile’ system for delivering bass sound.

The concept also has the ability to alter its ride height. A ground clearance of 11cm in the city is reduced to 7cm on motorways in order to improve aerodynamics and conserve battery life.

One of the most important features of the Fractal concept is its digital sound signature, which is used to alert pedestrians and cyclists to its presence. The sound is a response to forthcoming European legislation that states that all electric vehicles must make some sort of sound while driving by 2019.

Peugeot is one of a number of car makers that collaborated on the eVADER project, an EU-funded initiative to develop a sound symposer system for EVs.

In incorporating the eVADER system into the Fractal, Peugeot has as good as confirmed that it is working on a next-generation EV. Currently, the firm only has the iON electric city car.

Renault Talisman revealed - new pictures

The Talisman will be the Renault Laguna's replacement in Europe, but it won't be coming to the UK

Renault's Laguna replacement, the Talisman, has been revealed at the Frankfurt motor show. The Talisman will go on sale in Europe in the first half of 2016 in both saloon and estate forms, but won't be coming to the UK.

Design cues around the front end echo those of the next-generation Renault Megane, which is also due to arrive in 2016, while the Talisman’s overall shape is similar to traditional saloons like the Mazda 6 and Volkswagen Passat.

Renault says the Talisman nameplate was chosen as it “conjures up notions of both protection and power. At the same time, Talisman is an easy word to pronounce and understand the world over”.

The Talisman will come with a choice of two petrol and three diesel engine. The 108bhp 1.4-litre diesel engine is the most efficient of the range, with emissions starting at 95g/km when paired with the six-speed manual gearbox. A 1.6-litre dCi 130 and a dCi 160 are also offered, alongside a 147bhp and 197bhp petrol option.

Renault says that the new car will come with 4Control - a four-wheel steering system - and active dampers, which allow the driver to switch between Comfort, Sport, Eco and Neutral modes.

The Talisman name is already used on a four-door model sold in China. The aligning of the name with this new model shows Renault’s ambition to create a more global car.

The Talisman has been a long time coming, with plans for a more premium executive saloon to replace the Laguna stretching back to 2012. Renault bosses told Autocar in 2013 that the next Laguna would need to be a more adventurous model, and would need to incorporate the “fluid and emotional” styling seen in Renault’s smaller models. In particular, former Renault boss Carlos Tavares said inspiration would come from the Zoe, Captur and Clio models.

A Renault spokesman confirmed that the reason why Talisman would not be coming to the UK was the same reason why the new Espace won’t be seen in this country: because D-segment saloons and MPVs are not a growth area in the UK, with market trends instead showing a desire for SUVs and crossovers. By contrast, in Europe the saloon and MPV market is still relatively stable.

2015 Vauxhall Astra - new pictures, prices, engines and specs

All-new Astra will offer better interior quality and fresh exterior styling; it will be built in Britain

Prices for the all-new Vauxhall Astra have been confirmed, with entry-level models starting at £15,295.

The all-new car is smaller in size, cheaper but better equipped than the model it replaces, according to Vauxhall, which has put particular emphasis on making the Astra better to drive and a more attractive fleet proposition.

The new car is built on parent company GM's D2 platform and is 49mm shorter, 26mm lower and has a 23mm shorter wheelbase than the car it replaces. Despite this, cabin space and comfort are improved. Benefitting from new materials and construction methods, the new Astra offers weight savings of between 120kg and 200kg over the current car.

Inside, the new Astra features a large touchscreen infotainment system, a multi-function steering wheel, and the same instrument cluster display already seen on the new Corsa. This infotainment system is the latest IntelliLink R 4.0, which Vauxhall says is compatible with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto connectivity systems. It is also the first all-new Vauxhall to feature the Onstar system, which offers features such as 24-hour emergency assistance, an in-car wi-fi hotspot and access to vehicle data through a smartphone app. It will also alert the emergency services if an airbag is deployed.

Vauxhall wants the new Astra to have more appeal to the fleet market, which has led to the push for more efficient engines and lower list prices, which both help reduce company car tax.

The high-level of kit should make it an attractive prospect but Vauxhall feels there is a lot more to getting fleet managers on board than piling up the standard kit.

Vauxhall's emphasis on quality rather than pushing huge numbers of cars into the market. This in turn will allow the company to protect residual values and in turn, offer more favourable lease and finance deals.

The first clues to the look of the new Astra came with the Monza concept, unveiled at the Frankfurt show in September 2013. The shaped aluminium strip running from the roof and into each tail-light cluster is echoed in the final car, whose dark C-pillar trim is designed to give the car the look of having a floating roof panel.

There will be seven trim levels at launch in September, but even the most basic Design cars come with 16in alloy wheels, air-con, DAB radio, Bluetooth and cruise control as standard.

Fleet-focused Tech Line models add a larger touchscreen with sat-nav and a leather steering wheel for a £775 premium. Energy models are geared more towards consumers and get heated seats and steering wheel and 17in alloys, but no sat-nav. Prices start at £17,295.

SRi models are £970 cheaper than the previous generation equivalent, starting at £17,895. It is the cheapest model to get the OnStar 24hr emergency assistance system, wi-fi hotspot capabilities and smartphone app. It also gets a front camera system, sports seating, leather steering wheel and front foglights. A SRi Nav version adds the 8.0in touchscreen navigation system.

The top of the range Elite model pricing starts from £19,315 and offers a full-leather interior with 18-way adjustable front seats, folding mirrors and electronic climate control. It also has rear heated seats and an extra pair of USB sockets in the back. Again, a Nav version is available.

The new Astra gets all-new engine and transmission families for the new model, many of which have been seen in the recently launched Corsa.

The entry level unit is a 99bhp 1.4-litre naturally aspirated petrol unit which emits 124g/km, but the most interesting small engine option will be a new 1.0-litre, three-cylinder turbo petrol engine. Good for 104bhp and 124lb ft of torque from well below 2000rpm, a version of the engine is already offered in both the Adam and the new Corsa.

The 1.4-litre turbo option Autocar has already driven provides 148bhp and 175lb ft and is estimated to return up to 55mpg with CO2 emissions of around 128g/km. A lower output 1.4-litre turbo rated at 124bhp will also be offered. The top petrol engine is a 1.6-litre turbo petrol engine producing 197bhp which will be avaialble from January 2016.

The 1.6-litre diesel models offer the greenest options. Both the 109bhp and 135bhp versions are available with automatic and manual gearbox options. The Ecoflex version emits just 82g/km and has a claimed economy figure of 91mpg. A higher output biturbo diesel will be offered in early 2016 on SRi and Elite trims only.

Just as important to the Astra is a new six-speed manual gearbox. In 2013, when GM announced the new 1.6-litre diesel engine, the company admitted that its real weak point was manual gearboxes, partly because the basic design principle dated from the 1970s. The new transmission is said to weigh just 37kg and puts an emphasis on smooth shifts and a short lever action.

The new Astra made its public debut at the 2015 Frankfurt motor show and will be in showrooms ahead of its October launch. It will be built at the company’s plant at Ellesmere Port in Cheshire, UK.

As well as a five-door hatchback, a new Sports Tourer estate car will join the range in early 2016.

The Astra GTC will remain unchanged for the foreseeable future because it is far earlier in its life cycle than the hatch and estate.

New Vauxhall Astra Sports Tourer unveiled at Frankfurt motor show

More space but less weight in estate version of the latest Astra

Vauxhall is promising more interior space but improved efficiency and reduced weight with its new Astra Sports Tourer, which has made its debut at the Frankfurt motor show.

The estate version of the five-door Astra has the same basic dimensions as the model it replaces, with an overall length of 4702mm and a width of 1871mm. But Vauxhall claims that tweaks to the interior packaging have freed up an additional 26mm of front headroom, 28mm more rear headroom and an extra 80 litres of luggage space. With the rear seats folded down, the Sports Tourer now has a capacity of 1630 litres.

The Astra wagon’s load bay gets a 40/20/40 split rear seat as standard and it can be enhanced further by optional products from the FlexOrganiser range, including side rails, fasteners and cargo nets. The rear hatch can also be electrically operated and, as an option, opened and closed by waving a foot below the rear bumper.

As with the conventional Astra hatchback, the Sports Tourer makes significant weight gains - up to 200kg, in the case of the estate - thanks to a switch to General Motors' latest D2 platform.

Engine power outputs will start at 99bhp and go up to the 198bhp 1.6-litre petrol that’s also made its debut at Frankfurt. Other notable units will be a new 1.4-litre turbocharged petrol motor with 148bhp and Vauxhall’s latest 1.6-litre Whisper Diesel.

Much of the cabin trim and fascia design is carried over from the recently launched Astra - including Vauxhall’s OnStar connectivity package and an infotainment system that offers Apple’s CarPlay and Android Auto.

The Astra Sports Tourer is due on sale in October. Prices are likely to stay broadly in line with the outgoing model’s, with a starting figure of around £17,000.

New DS4 concept features stone interior trim

Citroen continues DS brand relaunch with a conceptual version of the DS4 Crossback that features stone as an interior trim

Citroen has unveiled a concept version of the new DS4 Crossback that features real granite as a trim material. The stone is used for the rearview mirror casings, the spoke facings on the wheels and as an insert on the roof bars.

The model also uses a very fine semi-aniline leather for the interior, including the seats, door panels and the entire dashboard.

Sources told Autocar that they expected to see the stone trim offered in production models 'within two or three years'. The stone is a flexible veneer less than 1mm thick and can be supplied by only one French-based company.

The leather used for the interior is especially soft and naturally textured, which Citroen says references traditional luxury goods and is intended to stand part from the very highly finished leather that is more common in luxury cars.

An insider also revealed that the company was developing a new type of wood-covered dashboard. "Around 75% of the dash facing will be made of real wood. We know that customers do not like huge areas of plastic in the interior, so we are working a fresh new ways of trimming the cabin. We think customers are willing to pay for this kind of innovation."

Five new DS models will be launched by 2020, creating a six-model line-up. The popular DS3 hatchback will replaced in "just over two years".

The brand is also looking to pick up a higher proportion of female buyers. In China 30% of DS buyers are women, compared with just 10-15% in Europe. In the ‘C-premium’ segment in Europe, 30% of buyers are female, but just 20% of DS4 sales are to women drivers.

Seat to make quick decision on Leon SC Cross Sport production

The Spanish firm is gauging social media reaction to a conceptual rugged all-wheel-drive version of the Seat Leon SC unveiled at the Frankfurt motor show

Seat will decide whether to put its Leon SC Cross Sport concept into production next Monday, according to company boss Jürgen Stackmann.

The Spanish company has shown the high-performance, off-road-focused three-door Leon concept at the Frankfurt motor show.

The company is monitoring feedback on forums and at the motor show itself before making a decision on whether to build the car and put it on sale.

The ride height has been raised to give the Leon SC Cross Sport 41mm more ground clearance than the standard Leon SC.

The concept is powered by the recently upgraded 286bhp version of the turbocharged 2.0-litre petrol engine used by the production Leon Cupra.

It also features permanent four-wheel drive.

The Seat Leon Cross Sport comes with styling upgrades including gloss black extended wheel arches and sills, larger air intakes, a quadruple exhaust and a rear roof spoiler. It also has two-tone 19in alloy wheels.

The Leon Cross Sport is only intended as a concept for now, with no word on whether it will make it into production.

However, the more rugged off-road cars pave the way for the Spanish company's forthcoming range of SUVs, which you can read about here.

This ties in with an emerging trend in the car industry, with mild off-roaders and SUVs becoming halo products that attract customers.

Next Mercedes-Benz E63 will be ‘revolutionary’, promises AMG chief

Due next year, the hot E-Class will be exclusively four-wheel drive and could get as much as 600bhp from its twin-turbocharged V8 engine

AMG boss Tobias Moers has promised that the next Mercedes-AMG E63 super-saloon will be “not an evolution but a pure revolution - the biggest step an AMG E-class has made”.

Speaking to Autocar at the Frankfurt motor show, Moers revealed that the performance E-class will be four-wheel-drive-only in all markets, but added, “Don’t worry - it will still do skids, drifts and all the stupid stuff we love.”

The E63 has already been spotted testing and according to sources is expected to benefit from “the next step” in the development of Mercedes-AMG's 4.0-litre V8 engine, which means it will have “something in the range” of 600bhp.

This is notably more power than that of the Mercedes-AMG GT sports car, which has 510bhp. An engine with this power would put the E63 even further ahead of the Audi RS6 and BMW M6, both of which offer 552bhp.

The new E63 is also expected to be lighter than the outgoing version and will be the first AMG model to use the new nine-speed automatic transmission.

There is no confirmed date for the E63’s arrival, but it is expected to go on sale in 2016, after the standard E-Class’s launch at the start of next year. The standard car is due to receive its global debut at the Detroit motor show next January.

Mazda remains committed to frugal Skyactiv technology

Japanese company's European boss rules out hybrids and reveals plans for a further 30 per cent gains in fuel economy from Skyactiv

Mazda is forging ahead with its strategy of developing the efficiency of its conventional engines under the Skyactiv banner rather than adopting hybridisation and plans to deliver a further 30 per cent improvement in fuel economy by 2020, according to European president Jeff Guyton.

Mazda engineers believe its next-generation engines can have even wider power bands than the current models. “I’ve driven prototypes of our next-generation engines, and they are everything you’d hope for in power and smoothness,” said Guyton.

He said Mazda’s Skyactiv engines don’t require the expensive multi-speed transmissions needed by other lean-burn engines and work well with a conventional six-speed gearbox.

“We have a real passion for efficient combustion,” said Guyton. “You could equate it to the passion we have for the Mazda MX-5 sports car. There’s huge heat wastage in conventional engines: surely it’s better to do something constructive about that then adding weight with extra power units?”

Guyton pointed out that Mazda doesn’t deny that electric propulsion will eventually arrive - it recently patented a range extender with a baby Wankel engine as the generator motor - but it feels super efficient conventional engines provide the best solution for now and the near future.

Renault’s design transformation under Laurens van den Acker

Following the full reveal of the new Renault Megane at the Frankfurt motor show today, it's time to hail the firm's design leader

Renault design chief Laurens van den Acker isn’t always an easy man to interview, but he is always great value. Every bit as quirky and clever as the custom-made trainers he wears to every motor show, he is never anything but polite, but can still manage to deliver answers with such passion that his intensity occasionally borders on menacing.

To me, that hints at a man with a sense of conviction that lurks just beneath the surface, shrouded in impeccable manners but not about to be deviated from its course. I’d also argue that his strength of character is just as well, given where he’s taken Renault from since his arrival in 2009. Of course, he hasn’t achieved it all by himself, but today’s full reveal of the new Renault Megane is further proof of his team’s transformation.

Think back to his team’s designs that feel just so right today, led by a Clio that set the tone for other cheeky, characterful cars in the range, such as the Twingo, Captur and Kadjar. That front end is, in particular, a stroke of genius, working on every type and size of car they produce, and making a merit of the diamond logo that has previously caused so much trouble. Then, away from UK buyer’s eyes, the Talisman (nee Laguna) and Espace have taken a different, more grown-up direction that has clearly influenced the Megane today.

Several weeks ago I was fortunate enough to be given a sneak, under-embargo tour of the new Renault Megane. The very fact this was happening suggested an underlying confidence – and everything I saw backed that up. At the end of the day a clearly harassed van den Acker came to talk us around his car, and answer our questions.

What I loved was that he didn’t duck the marque’s deficiencies of years gone by – “This segment is the most competitive in the world. We’re going up against the very best - not just VW Golf, Ford Focus and Vauxhall Astra but also Audi A3, BMW 1 Series and Mercedes A-Class. We know we must up our game.” – nor did he pretend that he’d already answered questions that were hanging. “I cannot predict if customers will like our dual approach with the younger cars and the more grown-up cars," he said. "It is up to them if they buy it, and only time will prove if we have done the right thing.”

Now, with the Megane out in the open, there is a shrinking number of Renaults in the pipeline that van den Acker must recreate. Not that his work is done: the rest of the Megane family looks logical enough, but the rebirth of the Scenic as a more crossover than MPV-led vehicle is intriguing. Beyond that, there is the mooted range of Alpines to conceive and see through and, no doubt, other all-new cars to launch into all-new sectors, all the while keeping what he has started spinning along.

The only disappointment is that van den Acker’s brilliance is not being matched by the dynamics team. I guess all car companies must put their investment where they see the biggest returns, and Renault’s sales figures suggest they’ve backed the right side of the equation. In time, though, van den Acker’s design-led revolution must be matched by more complete, rounded vehicles. In the meantime, though, he should put his brightly trainered feet up for a brief moment and savour the success.

Nissan Gripz concept previews new Z crossover

Datsun 240Z-inspired sports crossover concept reveals Nissan’s vision for an expanded Z sub-brand

Nissan has released its vision of how the next car to carry the famous Z badge could be a crossover with this Frankfurt show concept called Gripz.

With exterior design by the manufacturer’s team in Paddington and an interior created by their colleagues in Tokyo, the Gripz is billed as “a radical new type of sports car” by Nissan.

As outlined by Autocar last month, the firm intends to gauge reaction to the idea of a sports crossover, but it has already decided to expand the remit of the Z sub-brand to include vehicles that are more ‘everyday’ than the existing 370Z.

The Gripz draws inspiration from two main sources: the classic Datsun 240Z rally car that won the East African Safari Rally in 1971 and sports bicycles that are used as commuter tools during the week but enjoyed at the weekend.

The ‘z’ in Gripz is a direct nod to the Z brand. Visual cues include a distinctive kink in the window line near the C-pillar and a carbonfibre bonnet that apes the black finish on the rally car’s engine cover. A simple three-spoke steering wheel looks like it could have featured on the rally car, although it is adorned with bicycle-influenced graphics.

The Gripz is slightly shorter than a Juke, at 4100mm, and its roofline is 65mm lower. The concept is considerably wider, by 135mm, and its wheelbase is 50mm longer. The front end of the car incorporates many of Nissan’s latest styling cues, including the strong ‘V’ below the prominent badge in the grille and boomerang headlights that are influenced by both the Juke and the 370Z.

The side stance is unmistakably that of a sports car, with references to the stance of the 350Z and 370Z, albeit jacked up on 22in wheels. The cabin appears to have been pulled towards the back, while the roof rails - a mix of body-coloured material and a contrasting metal finish - taper down towards the car’s rear. The rear treatment includes deep scallops in the bodywork, boomerang tail-lights and, in another nod to the 240Z, an unusual carbonfibre element that incorporates a lip spoiler.

The concept uses a version of Nissan’s PureDrive Hybrid system, with a petrol engine acting as a range extender to keep the batteries charged and electric motors driving all four wheels. A production model would be based on Nissan’s forthcoming CMF AB platform - set to be used by the next Micra and Juke - and wouldbe front-wheel drive or four-wheel drive, with a turbocharged petrol engine.

The cabin is deliberately industrial, because Nissan’s designers in Tokyo wanted it to reflect the functionality of a sports bicycle. There are just a handful of materials on show, including artificial leather, carbonfibre and coloured metal with a mixture of gloss and anodised finishes.

Some of the leather patches are designed to be removed or changed for personalisation or if the owner wants even more of a bare cabin look. The layout is a 2+2, with two deeply scalloped rear seats cut into what looks like a single-piece panel.

A pair of carbonfibre spoilers at the end of the roofline give a modest boost to head room for the rear passengers, although they also house the hinges for the hatchback. The concept does without side mirrors, instead using cameras mounted in the  ‘gills’ on the front wings.

Nissan says the Gripz is a design study, but the brief for the design contest was to consider how the firm “can continue to lead the B-crossover market” and a 2+2 sports crossover - positioned alongside or slightly above the Juke in the line-up and carrying the fabled Z badge - is very likely to make production.

Philippe Klein, Nissan’s product planning chief, told Autocar at the Frankfurt motor show: “The concept is an exploration, to see different trends in the market. With crossovers and SUVs we’ve strengths already. We see people still looking for a dynamic sports car. Fuel economy also, and alternative drive. All these topics. [The concept] explores the best way to combine all these."

Klein did however say that the 370Z remains a success and Nissan had “no urgency” for a replacement, although he did say that “standard evolution is not best for this kind of product”. “We won’t see a 390Z or 400Z,” he said, as it “doesn’t make a lot of sense” in the current market.

Inside the Alfa Giulia (at last)

We've finally been allowed to sit in Alfa's Audi and BMW rival - and initial impressions are a bit hit-and-miss

Finally, they've unlocked the doors to the new Alfa Giulia and allowed us to try the seats for size. When Alfa unveiled its rival for the Audi A4 and BMW 3-series earlier this year, it fiercely protected its innards. Nobody was meant to photograph them, let alone put a bum on a seat. All of which made you wonder why.

My concerns were amplified this morning at the Frankfurt motor show, when I got my head bitten off for opening an unlocked door on the car - but midway through the day and with the stand's coffee bar firing out the espressos, nobody seemed to mind any more.

Perhaps inevitably, what's inside these top-spec go-faster models is a mix of majesty and mediocre. The sports seats are large, comfortable and supportive. The steering wheel feels big to the hand but is nicely assertive, with a decent range of rake and reach adjustment. The pedal spacing is also okay, at least on these left-hookers. Combined with the large, red steering wheel-mounted start button, there's a message here that this Quadrifoglio model is built for serious drivers.

And yet… The gearknob is comically large. The fit, finish and materials of the cubbyhole section of the car I was in were fine, but didn't scream quality as an Audi RS4, BMW M4 or Mercedes C63 AMG would. The infotainment screen was average, reflecting badly under the show lights and looking a bit underwhelming in its operation.

Don't get me wrong - the inside of an Alfa Giulia is a very fine place to be, but perhaps a little inconsistent in its qualities. Of course, many buyers won't give a damn about any of that because it's a fast Alfa.

Indeed, many will scoff at the suggestion that an Alfa should be anything else, but anyone expecting the car's launch to herald a cabin style and consistency to challenge the very best on offer from the Germans may be left a little bit underwhelmed.

Next-generation Renault Scenic to be launched in 2016

Renault's next-generation Scenic will challenge conventions with a radical overhaul, says design boss Laurens van den Acker

The next-generation Renault Scenic must be reinvented as a more practical, more modern vehicle or 'die' according to the firm's design boss, Laurens van den Acker.

Speaking to Autocar at the Frankfurt motor show, van den Acker said: "I feel the Scenic is due an overhaul - a radical change. Remember Renault invented the segment but then launched evolutions of the theme in the second and third generations of the cars. During that time the segment has come under serious pressure, to the point that we must reinvent the Scenic or let it die."

Hinting that the Scenic may follow the route of other MPVs into becoming more of a crossover shape, van den Acker said the new model would "challenge the sector."

"There's still a long way to go, but once Scenic is out there and our D Crossover next year we'll be in a position to start thinking about renewing and reinventing.

It's hard, when you are used to starting revolutions, to think about keeping established codes fresh each time, but I think the key will be for us to mix it up as we have done already. Clio was faithful to the sector's codes, Captur was more innovative.

"Kadjar evolved what Capture had done but hasn't challenged any established practices, whereas new Scenic will challenge the sector for sure. Talisman is very traditional, Espace is something new. We can mix these ideas up.

We still have a long way to go in my view. Yes, we'll have an all-new range soon, and evolving that brings a new mindset, but I don't see the end of the revolution at Renault just yet."

The new Scenic is scheduled to be launched at the Geneva motor show in March 2016, before going on sale in the UK later next year.

Why it's time to believe in Honda's Project 2&4

Radical single-seat track day car is a design exercise for the moment, but it really needs to be built if it's to be fully appreciated

“If you don’t believe in it I may as well give up and go home…” Never has a truer sentence been spoken at a motor show. These are the words of Honda Project 2&4 designer Martin Petersson, and I’ve just had the pleasure of having him show me around his creation.

Petersson has been a designer at Honda’s motorcycle division in Japan for the past six years. He’s had a brief stint designing BMW motorcycles, but his main work before that came at KTM. Where he worked on the design of the X-Bow.

“This started as an internal design competition, and more than 80 people took part,” he told me. “The brief was to use the V4 Moto GP engine on a four wheeled car. This is how I imagined it.”

Petersson’s design went all the way through the competition and onto the Frankfurt motor show stand. All in the project took around a year.

What does the car say about Honda, then? “It says we’ve a unique capacity for four and two wheels. We make everything, aeroplanes even. We’re different, and sometimes merge stuff. This comes right down to our slogan, the power of dreams.”

The key question then, will Honda build it? Petersson, a man who designs everything from scooters to Dakar racing bikes at Honda, has made sure the tiny 405kg machine can be adapted to meet relevant safety legislation, so the decision is very much in the hands of the grown-ups at Honda.

“We should make it, I wish we could…,” said Petersson with a glint in his eye. “It’s not too crazy to do. There’s lots of bike parts, such as the suspension and brakes. The pedals are from a car. To make a central backbone frame like this is not too complicated, it’s the same as on a bike but scaled up.

“We’ll take it step by step, day by day, that’s the hope [it making production].

“It depends on what’s written, and the reactions to it. There are always possibilities. We’ve done crazy stuff in the past. If you don’t believe in it I may as well give up and go home.”

Honda, if you’re reading this: make it, make it now, and we’ll see the finished version in time for the 2017 Frankfurt motor show. Or sooner if you’d be so kind. Thank you.
