Report: Is the death of Chrysler’s SRT HEMI V8 nigh?

Some sad news is ringing in from MotorAuthority who observed some bits of news from Jeep enthusiast site, JeepTrackhawkForums. There, they heard from a “reliable source” that Chrysler may be retiring the HEMI V8 entirely by 2019

So basically, Chrysler’s ridding themselves of one of the major powerplants that’s defined American motoring for decades, and is one of the few signatures in existence today that wholly represents how we do things here. Say it ain’t so!

According to said source, this means both 6.4L and supercharged 6.2L variants in the SRT category to make way for a new line of twin-turbocharged V6s. This however doesn’t speak for the standard 5.7L HEMI V8 serving duty in cars like the Dodge Challenger, Charger, Chrysler 300 and the Jeep Grand Cherokee.

Additionally, this sort of contradicts Chrysler’s current plans to introduce a Jeep Grand Cherokee “Hellcat” version called the TrackHawk, which is due sometime in 2017. That would make the TrackHawk Grand Cherokee very short-lived.

Either way, Chrysler’s and Dodge’s line of SRT cars are highly-anticipated to become collectors at some point, especially the Hellcat versions. Though we won’t know for sure about the fate of the SRT-modified HEMI V8s until Fiat-Chrysler Automobiles themselves spill the beans.
