The McLaren 650S might seem like an all-new car by name but in reality, it’s just a refreshed and slightly reengineered version of the original MP4-12C. An all new-replacement is actually on the way and it should be ready sometime in 2018, according to AutoCar.
Internally nicknamed the P14, the new successor to the 650S should be expected to sport more power than the current model’s 650S, which already is pretty batshit insane fast. Though because Ferrari revealed their 488GTO, McLaren–a direct rival to Ferrari–will seek to one-up Italy’s Prancing Horse.
The current goals for the new car are set at a 0-62 time of less than three seconds and a top speed of more than 205 mph. Internally, the next-gen 650S successor should be based off of a modified version of the current model’s carbon fiber tub construction, along with the company’s ubiquitous use of their in-house 3.8L twin-turbocharged V8.
Visually, McLaren’s design director, Frank Stephenson hinted at visuals heavily inspired by the P1, but in a “crazier” fashion…whatever that means.
And while there’s a 650S coupe, there’s plenty of reason to expect a convertible version too. But that won’t surface until 2019.
