It should be no surprise that the midsize pickup segment is heating up again thanks to a resurgence of new models from General Motors and Toyota, namely the new Chevrolet Colorado, GMC Canyon, and the new 2016 Toyota Tacoma.
With those new models out, the remaining models in the segment include the Nissan Frontier, which awaits a replacement and has midsize and compact pickup enthusiasts wondering about the Ford Ranger, a midsize trucks still made and sold to markets abroad, except for our own.
But a new report from Detroit News says a new Ford Ranger could surface by 2018. The Ranger was certainly a popular model during its heyday when it was sold in America and was the best-selling compact pickup truck in the US betwen 1987 and 2004. But it died off due to low demand, and also Ford seemingly didn’t give a shit about the Ranger, to focus their efforts elsewhere and on the F150.
The news comes in after contract negotiations began with the United Auto Workers union and Ford, to possibly introduce a production line for a new Range at Ford’s Michigan Assembly Plant in 2018. Should all go through, the Ranger will be made at that plant while the next-gen Ford Focus’ and C-Max’s production moves to Mexico, away from their current assembly at the same Michigan plant.
