Report: A new Toyota Prius is bound to be revealed next month

2012 Toyota Prius Plug-in Hybrid

CNET reports a Toyota’s next-gen hybrid halo car, the Prius, is expected to be replaced by a new model, due for a reveal sometime next month. Treehuggers and hippies gather ’round! It’s time to get excited!

The current Toyota Prius has been with us since 2009 as a 2010 model and by now, that makes it around five to six years old. So it’s naturally about due for a replacement, time wise.

Toyota’s been coy with specifics and details as to what to expect with the new model and rumors haven’t been that aplenty. Though with the latest report, word is the new Prius should be built on Toyota’s latest New Global Architecture, promising a lighter curb weight and thus more fuel efficiency.

Additionally, electric motor and battery technology has certainly improved over the years.

Like the current lineup, the new Prius should be supplemented with a plug-in hybrid variant, a larger Prius V people mover, and a more compact and affordable Prius C. Though despite the variants, none of them have been able to sell quite as well as the normal, five-door variant.
