AMG boss Tobias Moers has promised that the next Mercedes-AMG E63 super-saloon will be “not an evolution but a pure revolution - the biggest step an AMG E-class has made”.
Speaking to Autocar at the Frankfurt motor show, Moers revealed that the performance E-class will be four-wheel-drive-only in all markets, but added, “Don’t worry - it will still do skids, drifts and all the stupid stuff we love.”
The E63 has already been spotted testing and according to sources is expected to benefit from “the next step” in the development of Mercedes-AMG's 4.0-litre V8 engine, which means it will have “something in the range” of 600bhp.
This is notably more power than that of the Mercedes-AMG GT sports car, which has 510bhp. An engine with this power would put the E63 even further ahead of the Audi RS6 and BMW M6, both of which offer 552bhp.
The new E63 is also expected to be lighter than the outgoing version and will be the first AMG model to use the new nine-speed automatic transmission.
There is no confirmed date for the E63’s arrival, but it is expected to go on sale in 2016, after the standard E-Class’s launch at the start of next year. The standard car is due to receive its global debut at the Detroit motor show next January.
