Diesel passenger cars haven’t been getting a good reputation lately thanks to Volkswagen’s Dieselgate. But this isn’t stopping Cadillac from continuing the research and development of their own diesel cars in order to prep them for arrival on US shores.
This is a bit ironic since Cadillac was one of the brands to ruin the reputation of diesel passenger cars during the Malaise era of General Motors in the late 1970s and early 1980s. But nonetheless, bravo Cadillac.
GM’s Executive Vice President for Global Product Development, Mark Reuss, spoke to CARandDRIVER, who said GM’s current example, the Chevy Cruze Diesel, was too good to not sell in the American market, and as a result, GM’s strides in diesel technology are yielding positive results–results that are convincing enough to add Cadillac to the diesel portfolio.
Though of course, Reuss kept his cards close as to what specific models could be due with diesels and what type of mills they’d be. But another sign that GM is serious about diesels is the introduction of the new Chevrolet Colorado and GMC Canyon Duramax diesel models.
Chances are, the new mills are of the four- and six-cylinder type and initially, they’re being developed for the European market, though bringing them over to the US won’t be particularly difficult.
