Nissan has been a pioneer with the mass implementation of the Continuously Variable Transmission, or the “gearless” transmission, also notorious for the “rubber band effect” and being a car’s “character robber.”
But lately, they’ve shown very strong strides with the CVT, especially with their latest renditions, especially in the new Nissan Maxima. And recently, Nissan and their CVT supplier, Jatco, announced a new CVT for compact front-wheel drive models.
The new CVT is said to boast “enhanced driving performance” thanks to an improved design that reduces friction via an enhanced compact oil pump, as well as new designs for the belts and pulleys. It also prevents “excessive engine pick-up response when starting off,” probably as way to tone down overly aggressive throttle tip-in.
The first car to receive the revised CVT is Nissan’s Lannia model in China, which is more or less destined to likely be our next Sentra.
