Report: Subaru apparently plans up to four new STI models

Subaru is apparently seeking to up the ante with its STI lineup by not leaving the Impreza WRX STI as the sole offering. This could mean that gorgeous BRZ STI Concept we saw at New York earlier this year could potentially make it to production…or so we wish and hope.

STI’s chief, Yoshio Hirakawa spoke with Australia’s Motoring, to say the STI lineup could expand by as many as four models in the near-future.

Other possibilities include a high-performance version of the Legacy, which would be welcome since the last performance Legacy happened two generations ago with the rare 2.5GT B-Spec from 2006; an STI-treated Outback, and perhaps even an STI version of the Legacy wagon, the Levorg.

Though more importantly, the idea of a BRZ STI Concept was denied consistently by Subaru, despite them revealing various STI-themed versions, including a full-fledged STI version in concept form at the 2015 New York Auto Show.

I mean, no matter how many times they say it won’t happen, why the heck would they go through the effort to spend the resources to build and introduce a seemingly near-production ready concept of the BRZ STI at New York? They are interested in one, we’ve cried out loud for one, so they’d be foolish not to make one.

Hirakawa also supposedly said they could be adopting electric turbocharger technology, while improving the quality of their cars with better handling and ride comfort, and more aggressive soundtracks from their signature flat-engines. They’re also further developing ways to improve their CVT transmission.
