Report: Honda confirms plans to reveal ten-speed automatic in the not-so-distant future

2016 Honda Civic Sedan

Amid their announcements at and press conferences at the 2015 Tokyo Motor Show, Honda also confirmed to be developing a new ten-speed automatic, which they claim should be ready within the not-so-distant future.

Honda’s technology strategy head, Keiji Ohtsu, shared some details, noting the 10-speed auto would be designed specifically for Honda’s front-wheel drive vehicles, so pretty much every car in their entire lineup. Not only that, it would replace the current six-speed automatic outright and can be paired with anything from Honda’s legendary V6 to their inline-fours. Obviously, the boxes will have different gearing to cater to the specific power bands of each motor.

We’re not sure what this means for the Acura front though since Honda just launched a new nine-speed automatic for the 2016 model year Acura MDX.

The transmission, like all other Honda cog swappers, is being developed in-house and promises to deliver up to 30% fast shifts, while boosting fuel economy by 6%, depending on the application.
