Report: Mazda could introduce a new crossover to compete with the Subaru Outback

2015 Mazda Koeru Concept

Mazda just introduced the new CX-9, a successor to their full-size crossover SUV lineup, joining the subcompact CX-3 and the compact CX-5 with rumors abound of a follow-up to the CX-7 floating around.

Now, it seems Mazda could be expanding their crossover offerings even further with a production version of the Mazda Koeru Concept as a competitive alternative to the librarian’s ride of choice, the Subaru Forester.

The word comes in from AutomotiveNews, who spoke with Mazda’s CEO, Masamichi Kogai, and Kogai said the model would be comparable in size to the Subaru Outback wagon, though it’ll be a far sportier alternative to the Outback and even the Forester and the CX-5.

The Subaru Outback, and even the Forester in some respects, are sort of in their own respective markets, trotting along next to the otherwise mainstream crossover offerings as very niche products. But with Mazda’s potential new plans with a production Koeru Concept, they might soon have more to worry about.
