After 68 years in production, the classic Land Rover Defender is finally no more

2016 - The Last Classic Land Rover Defender

There are many storied histories throughout the automotive industry, but the one about the Land Rover Defender and how it birthed an icon is by far one of the more significant ones.

That’s because the Defender has technically been in production for over 68 years, first beginning life as the pre-production “Huey” Series I.

So, Land Rover wasn’t just going to give the last classic Defender ever, a quiet nudge into the sunset.

To commemorate this rather sad occasion, Land Rover produced a one-off model, which is destined for the Jaguar-Land Rover Collection Museum where it’ll be put on display.

It is a short-wheelbase Defender 90 two-door, festooned in a light turquoise blue with a fabric top, and as it rolled off the assembly line to mark the last-ever classic Defender to be made, Land Rover brought its 700 Solihul-based factory workers together for a special ceremony, to bid the model’s farewell.

So far from what we know, the all-new next-generation Defender is expected to be revealed sometime in 2018 as Land Rover was forced back to the drawing board following critical reception of the first concepts.
