General Motors loves badge-engineering their cars. By badge-engineering, we mean, taking a single preexisting model, then giving it some aesthetic and package updates to match a different brand in the company’s portfolio, and then playing it off like it’s completely different.
In some cases it has worked, like the Chevrolet Tahoe and its corporate cousins, the slightly more luxurious GMC Yukon and the ballin’ Cadillac Escalade. They’re all pretty much the same truck, but with changes here and there. GM’s not the only one as you have Honda and Acura, Toyota and Lexus and so-on. But there have been cases where it hasn’t worked, like abomination of a vehicle the Chrysler TC “by Maserati” was.
Nonetheless, General Motors knows somewhat how to successfully badgineer cars, though some instances exist where General Motors didn’t go all the way, like with the large crossover cousins on the Lambda platform, the Chevrolet Traverse, the GMC Acadia, Buick Enclave, and once in the past, the Saturn Outlook. It’s pretty much covered all of GM’s brands, except for one: Cadillac. And that’s about to change.
Numerous reports from AutomotiveNews apparently confirm the impending doom of a new crossover SUV in the already huge plethora of models in existence today. Specifically, it’ll come from Cadillac and it’ll have three rows. Attention families and livery companies!
According to the report, the Cadillac will showcase GM’s latest long-wheelbase C1XX platform, which puts to rest the former Lambda platform since the new GMC Acadia shares that same C1XX platform as the latest Cadillac XT5 replacement for the SRX. Speaking of which, the C1XX platform will be stretched to accomodate the new three-row crossover, as is the case with the 2017 Acadia.
Not much else is known, as the tips came from Sir Johan de Nysschen, Mr. President of Cadillac. But other sources were heard suggesting a timeframe for launch sometime in 2018. We’d also bet money on a name, going along the lines of XT6.
Yay…more crossovers…/sarcasm.
