A fairly big pact and agreement was announced in between the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration and 20 different automakers to make automatic braking a standard safety feature on all new models by 2022. This is in a similar push for increased automotive safety, like with the standardization of rear-view reverse cameras on all new cars by 2016.
The automakers that agreed to the pact include: Audi, BMW, Fiat-Chrysler Automobiles, Ford Motor Company, General Motors, Honda, Hyundai, Jaguar-Land Rover, Kia, Maserati, Mazda, Mercedes-Benz, Mitsubishi, Nissan, Porsche, Subaru, Tesla Motors, Toyota Motor Company, Volkswagen AG, and Volvo. This also means all of the company’s respective sub-brands.
The agency and the automakers made this pretty sizable, and what’s being considered as “unprecedented” move, to help reduce automotive casualties.
So basically, what the NHTSA and 20 automakers are acknowledging are all the idiots who do stupid things behind the wheel, such as doing their make-up, reading the Sunday Times, or lord forbid, texting or emailing behind the wheel.
Do you think this is a good move? Or is this just another way to drive the cost of cars up with standard technology that not everyone will use or employ, thus classifying it as a waste?
