Fuel economy and emissions are by far some of the biggest concerns for the automobile industry–so much in fact that now the feds in Japan are cracking down on Mitsubishi for falsifying fuel consumption figures.
In an official investigation launched by Mitsubishi themselves, word is Nissan Motors Corporation stumbled upon irregularities with some fuel economy ratings for some of the mini “Kei cars” from Mitsubishi in some comparison tests. Mitsubishi apparently supplies Nissan with some Kei cars to “rebadge” and sell them as such.
Nissan brought it up to Mitsubishi, who then learned about the optimistic fuel consumption numbers and in their own investigation Mitsubishi found that the tests were conducted improperly during the certification of fuel economy ratings.
They also found that around 625,000 vehicles are affected and the cars involved have been delivered since June 2013.
Mitsubishi pledged ing their statement to fix the issue with all those affected.
