After many teasers, reports and countdowns, Tesla Motors finally held their highly-anticipated press conference, all to reveal the brand-new and much-hyped Model 3 sedan, and it’s exactly as we expected and as Elon Musk promised.
Pegged as essentially a mini-me model S, the Model 3 starts at a far more humble $35,000 to boot, versus the Model S’s of $69,900.
For that, you get a Model S in a package the size of a BMW 3-Series. But that’s not all as the Model 3 comes with some perks that the Model S does not–for instance, Tesla’s highly praised Autopilot autonomous hardware is standard and all cars are Supercharger-capable.
Thanks to the efficient layout of the electric powertrain, five adults are said to sit comfortably with ample leg, head and shoulder room and overall, remarks so far describe a very “airy” cabin that’s spacious. Helping contribute to that feeling is the fact that the Model 3 essentially comes with an all-glass roof. At least, the rear-window is once piece meshing into the roofline, with a separate, immobile pane up front. So in essence, it’s a hatch-like rear.
Power the Model 3 is a setup that allows for a 215-mile range with a 0-60 time in less than six seconds.
Oh, and in case you were wondering, out of all the people who stood outside Tesla stores to place a preorder, the company tallied up around 115,000 in total, with all orders requiring a $1000 refundable deposit. That’s an insane preorder figure.
