The BMW i3 gets updated for 2017 with more driving range and improved battery performance

2017 BMW i3

BMW announced to be applying some minor updates to the i3 for the 2017 model year, most of which involve some extra battery power and improved performance, yielding a greater driving range distance.

Speaking of which, the battery gets improved thanks to a 50% increase in charge capacity thanks to a greater energy density with the lithium-ion battery cells. Yes, if you haven’t known already, the BMW i3’s battery is basically a bunch of laptop batteries bound together in a network.

The battery pack as a whole is capable of 94 ampere hours worth of battery capacity with a 33 kWh total of battery energy. The result is a range of 114 miles on one charge. The new battery also allows the 2017 BMW i3 to take the title as the most efficient car in its segment with a consumption figure rated at 27 kWh for every 100 miles traveled.

In comparison, the original BMW i3’s battery pack was only capable of 22 kWh. So it is a reasonably sizable increase, especially when stacked up to the range of only 80 miles.

Because of the new battery, the REx “range-extended” version also benefits from the improved battery performance as well.

Pricing hasn’t been announced yet either, but we can’t imagine it to deviate much from the original i3’s MSRP of $42,400.
