Toyota marks selling a total of 9 million hybrids worldwide since the beginning

2016 New York - 2017 Toyota Prius Prime

Toyota is by far one of the first names associated with hybrid gas-electric vehicles, and it all started when they were the first to make the concept widely accessible to the public with the Toyota Prius in 1997. Since then, the car has been an absolute smash hit in terms of sales and just as of the end of last month, Toyota accomplished selling a total of nine million hybrids since the company sold their first one.

Now, I know how one could easily tout their hate for the Prius, especially if you’re a general car person like any of us. However, you cannot ignore the fact that this is a really impressive feat. Just to put this into perspective, with the total amount of Toyota hybrids sold, you could give one to each citizen in the country of Serbia, and still have a surplus of Toyota hybrid models. That’s how many they made.

Toyota’s next marker is to sell up to 15 million hybrids by the end of the decade. This has a chance of being accomplished since Toyota currently has 33 hybrid passenger models available in more than 90 countries.

So far, Toyota also was able to calculate some more math, such as the claim that they’ve saved around 25 million kiloliters of gasoline while emitting 67 million fewer tons of CO2 from these hybrids. Of course, if you’re really into the nitty-gritty of the science and math behind these figures, it matters whether these savings are from the cars themselves, without factoring the total manufacturing process from the start, such as mining the nickel for the battery packs, to the complete end-user, where the new owner drives off the lot. But that’s a discussion for another day.

Toyota’s influx of hybrids and EVs is mainly attributed to the company’s huge initiative, called “Environmental Challenge 2050,” where they’re pushing to reduce the environmental impacts of the automobile.
