Report: The next Dodge Charger sedan could go on a diet and get a force-fed four-banger

Dodge is looking to change things up with the next version of the Dodge Charger as AutomotiveNews reports the new generation is scheduled to go on a pretty significant diet. But not only that as the weight reduction could also make way for the use of a new force-fed four-banger as well.

Now, you might be already thinking, blasphemy, a muscle car like the Charger should only come with the choice of a V6 or a V8, not some puny little turbocharged four-banger. But already, Chevrolet and Ford have proven that their muscle cars can do just fine with a turbocharged four. In fact, the Camaro and Mustang never handled better, with a lighter lump up front and comprehensive suspension designs to complement.

So no, the Charger getting a turbo-four isn’t a bad thing–contracting AIDS, now that’s a bad thing.

Not much else is known, other than speculation also suggests a new platform for the Charger as the current car is riding on one based off of the W210 mid-1990s Mercedes-Benz E-Class. In other words, it’s way overdue for a replacement.

The diet could amount to around 500lbs off the current car, bringing the base curb weight down to 3,500lbs, which for a car of its size, is quite good.

Does the inclusion of a new turbo four mean the death of the HEMI V8? Well, I wouldn’t go to that extreme of speculation, but, it is something that could be of worry since fuel economy still isn, and will forever be, an issue.
