It was nearly 75 years ago today that the Willys-Overland Co. received the official contract by the United States military to supply the agency with a utilitarian vehicle to be used for fleet purposes. That contract led to the production of the Willys MB, and that eventually led to the introduction of what the world generically refers to as the OG “Jeep.” And the OG “Jeep” is what eventually evolved into the truck we know as the popular Wrangler.
To celebrate the occasion, Jeep designed and built a one-off concept themed to reflect the original Willys look, and it’s called the Wrangler 7th Salute.
Complete with a U.S. Army-green paint and livery theme, the one-off concept begins life as Wrangler Sport with the 3.6L Pentastar V6 and a six-speed manual. The doors and B-pillars are removed to better mimic the Willys setup, while steel bumpers with integrated tow hooks replace the stock plastic ones found on the normal Wranglers that normal people can buy.
Further complementing the package is a forward flat-folding windshield, a rear-mounted spare, canvas seats, and 16-inch steelie wheels with 32-inch military-grade off-road tires.
Thanks to the stripped-down nature of the Willys Jeep, the modern Wrangler rendition loses 1,300lbs from ditching all of the consumer fluff, like the normal Wrangler’s infotainment system, and other creature comforts.
