Behold: The Tesla Model X has been revealed in full on the web and in California

2016 Tesla Model X

Tesla finally pulled the wraps off of its highly-anticipated, Model X EV crossover SUV at a special event at their factory in Freemont, California.

Pegged as the world’s first-ever fully-electric mass-production crossover SUV, it basically lives up to our expectations as being a raised Model S sedan with more room.

Boasting a 0.24 cd drag coefficient, thanks to active body work such as the rear spoiler, and simple sleek design void of lots of creases and curves to make it slick as a fish through the air, the Model X promises to serve up lots of range and performance. Speaking of body work, the concept’s original Falcon Wing doors remain, allowing for ease of access. Though, we’d imagine low-clearance roofs and garages may be a challenge.

Inside there’s seating for up to seven people, with that possibly reducing to six, thanks to a 2+3+2 arrangement, front-to-aft, or 2+2+2 arrangements. This is thanks to the lack of need for any underbody tunnels, otherwise required to make room for either driveshafts or exhaust pipes. Instead, in the floor sits the battery pack, much like the Model S, to keep the center of gravity low and to keep the battery away from volatile collision points.

Speaking of which, the powertrain can be had in a couple forms, depending on which version you get. The Model X will be offered in two versions, both all-wheel drive. The 90D features two 255hp electric motors, one at each axle, allowing for a 0-60 time of just 4.8 seconds and a range estimated to crack 257 miles.

The top-spec P90D however gets one 255hp electric motor, assisted by a whopping 500hp electric motor, to bump the 0-60 time of 3.8 seconds. Blimey…

Oh yea, and there’s even a Ludicrous Speed upgrade available to drop that down to 3.2 seconds, to possibly make the Model X the world’s quickest crossover SUV in terms of acceleration.

Take THAT Bentley Bentayga’s 0-60 time of four seconds.

Keeping handling in check is standard adaptive air suspension, lots of active and passive safety gear, supported by a whole range of camera, radar, and sonar-based systems. And get this: there’s even a “bioweapon defense mode” that cleans the air inside of the cabin so much, it created “positive pressure inside the cabin to protect occupants.” So you know, in the event ISIS plans to launch a bioweapon attack against us, you’d be all set with the Tesla Model X.

The order books are open, but the Model X won’t begin shipping until the second half of 2016.

For the press release, check it out below.

Safety First

Tesla Architecture

Built electric from the ground up, Model X is designed to be the safest car on the road. Our crash tests indicate that Model X will receive a 5 star safety rating in all categories, the first SUV to ever do so.

Not needing a big gasoline engine under the hood, Model X has a large crumple zone to absorb the energy of a high-speed impact. The battery’s location on the floor gives Model X an extremely low center of gravity, reducing the risk of rollover common in most SUVs. Aluminum pillars reinforced with steel rails protect occupants and the battery while improving roof stiffness.

Active Safety

Model X comes standard with automatic emergency braking and side collision avoidance to prevent accidents from happening in the first place. Tesla makes the only standard AEB system that works at high speed.

Every Model X carries a forward-looking camera, radar, and 360 degree sonar sensors to enable advanced autopilot features. Tesla’s over-the-air software updates regularly improve the sophistication of these features, enabling increasingly capable safety and convenience features like Autosteer and Autopark, and bringing the Model X ever closer to autonomous operation.

Breathe Easy

Model X is the world’s cleanest SUV on the inside, too. The front fascia is designed with a functional duct that pushes air through the first true HEPA filter system available in an automobile allowing medical-grade air to fill the cabin, no matter what is going on outside.

Inside Model X

Model X Falcon Wing doors offer unprecedented convenience, entry, and maneuverability for everyday life. They provide seamless ingress and egress into the second and third row. No longer do parents have to cantilever themselves to avoid hitting their child’s head on the roof as they place them in a car seat.

The double-hinged Falcon Wing doors open up then out, requiring only 30 cm of space on the side of the vehicle. Each door is equipped with capacitive, inductive, and sonar sensors to monitor surroundings and avoid contact with obstacles around the car, making it possible to park in tight spots.

The industry’s first auto presenting door automatically opens and closes as the driver approaches or exits Model X. Why should the driver ever need to touch the door?

Monopost seats move independently, sliding and tilting forward and back. They allow passengers easy access to the third row and give them plenty of foot room when they sit down.

See

The windshield in Model X stretches up and over the front seat occupants. Second row passengers get a first row vantage point with an expansive view ahead, atop the falcon wing door, and beside them. The windshield’s solar tint transition completes the modern and open feel.

Listen

Seventeen precisely positioned speakers bring concern hall like sound inside Model X.

Touch

The 17″ center touchscreen seamlessly integrates media, navigation, communications, cabin control and vehicle data into one intuitive interface. Many functions are mirrored on the instrument panel and are voice-activated to focus the driver’s attention on the road.

Whether big or little, there’s a place to store it in Model X. Side pockets, a center console and a blind holster for your iPhone.

Fit everything

Model X provides unprecedented space for passengers and cargo. With three rows of seats, a front and rear trunk, and room under the second row seats, there’s ample room for people, luggage, and big things like surf boards and bikes. For even heavier cargo, Model X is the first electric vehicle with a 5,000 lb. tow capacity.

Performance

Agility and Speed

At the heart of the vehicle is Tesla’s proven electric powertrain, accelerating Model X from 0-60 in a staggering 3.2 seconds and hitting a top speed of 155 mph, all while producing zero emissions.

Designed with Tesla’s electric vehicle architecture, Model X’s floor-mounted battery gives the vehicle a low center of gravity and ideal weight distribution for exhilarating performance and superior handling.

Aerodynamics

At 0.24, Model X has the lowest drag coefficient of any SUV in history.

Model X comes standard with an active spoiler that automatically adjusts to three positions for maximum visibility and efficiency. Under 45 mph, the spoiler is positioned so the driver can see above and below it. At higher speeds the spoiler partially retracts for improved highway efficiency (+1.6%), and optimizes the vehicle’s lift distribution. Model X is the only car with an active spoiler equipped with a center-high-mounted stop lamp (CHMSL).

All-wheel drive

Dual motors digitally and independently control torque to the front and rear wheels to give Model X unparalleled control of traction while increasing performance and efficiency.

Signature Model X comes with a 90 kWh battery providing customers a driving range of 250 miles on a single charge.

Honda reveals new FCV hydrogen-fuel cell vehicle to take on the Toyota Mirai

Honda revealed their latest hydrogen fuel-cell vehicle that’s naturally called the FCV, at least for now as they say it’s tentative in their press statement, all in an effort to compete directly with Toyota’s new Mirai.

Due at the Tokyo Motor Show, this is the third installment to Honda’s saga in the effort to try and produce a feasible fuel-cell vehicle, with the previous being the FCX Clarity and the original, first-generation FCX.

It may be a bit polarizing to look at, as in either you love it or hate it, but it’s clearly representative of Honda’s latest design language, with the four-door coupe profile that’s similar to the one found on the latest Civic sedan, as well as the distinct front-end with Honda’s new corporate chrome trim across the grille.

The interior however looks to be very upscale with lots of leather, wood trim and metallic bits to add a bit of variation to the insides, where Honda’s been known to be a bit monotonous with color and tones.

Not much in the way of mechanical information was shared, but the FCV is said to offer up to 435 miles of range with its fuel-cell powertrain before needing to refuel. Driving the wheels is a set of high-output electric motors.

Check out the press release below for full semi-info, plus Honda’s plans at this year’s Tokyo Auto Show.

Key models on display
【Automobiles】

  • All-new FCV (tentative name): Honda original technologies made this vehicle the world’s first*1 production model of a FCV sedan with the entire fuel-cell powertrain consolidated under the hood of a sedan-type vehicle. This powertrain layout enabled a full cabin package that seats five adults comfortably. Moreover, the all-new FCV features a cruising range of more than 700 km*2 and exhilarating driving made possible by the high-output motors. Furthermore, when combined with an external power feeding inverter, this FCV can function as a “mobile power plant” that generates and provides electricity to the community in the case of an emergency.
  • All-new NSX: the all-new NSX is a supercar model that features the new-generation direct-injected twin turbo VTEC V6 engine mounted on a lightweight vehicle body in a mid-ship layout together with a highly-efficient and high-output SPORT HYBRID SH-AWD® (Super Handling-All Wheel Drive™) hybrid system, which realizes both outstanding driving performance and fuel economy. The low and wide exterior design realizes dynamic and elegant styling while the interior design, developed under the concept of a “Human Support Cockpit,” offers excellent visibility and an exotic driving position.
  • All-new Civic Type R: Striving to realize driving performance the driver can enjoy in completely different dimensions, from a racing circuit to an ordinary road, the basic performance of an automobile – go, stop, turn – was honed to the ultimate level. In addition to the exterior design with enhanced aerodynamic performance, the all-new Civic Type R features the world’s first application of Honda’s new 2.0-liter VTEC TURBO engine. The combination of original Honda VTEC technology, direct-injection technology and a turbocharger realized peak power output of 310 PS*3 and peak torque of 400 Nm*3 – both higher than for any previous Honda Type R model. In combination with the 6-speed manual transmission, the Civic Type R development car set the world lap time record*4 for a mass-production front-wheel drive vehicles at the legendary Nürburgring Nordschleife (“North Loop”) in Germany, demonstrating the vehicle’s outstanding driving performance.

【Motorcycles】

  • Light Weight Super Sports Concept: Designed with the key phrase “strong presence,” this next-generation super sport concept model and features a look possessing a sense of speed that comes from its long nose and low crouching position. The combination of a plane architecture, which indicates the sense of hardness and solidity, and sharp edges emphasize the aggressive look of this model. Moreover, the exterior featuring matte-black-based low-contrast graphics expresses beauty and the remarkable form.
  • NEOWING: NEOWING is an unprecedented three-wheeled vehicle that offers the cornering feel and sporty ride equivalent to a large-sized motorcycle while realizing excellent stability in low-speed ranges. This vehicle is equipped with a hybrid system that combines a horizontally-opposed 4-cylinder engine and electric motors to generate plentiful torque for powerful acceleration. With the adoption of an original Honda linkage mechanism on its front wheel, this concept model proposes new values with advanced styling that emphasizes the mechanical fascination of a two-wheeled motorcycle model.
  • EV-Cub Concept: It is a personal commuter model for short-distance commuting that follows the concept of an “easy-to-handle and economical motorcycle” that Honda has been pursuing since the creation of the first-generation Super Cub. By placing the battery, a heavy component, at a low position in the middle of the body, the ease of getting on and off the bike was achieved. Moreover, ease-of-handling was pursued through concentration of the mass and lowering of the center of gravity. In consideration of ease-of-use in a broader range of use environments, the battery itself was made detachable in addition to the fact that it is rechargeable using a standard home wall socket.

Report: The Alfa Romeo Giulia should be ready to be sold by the end of 2016, in the UK at least

2016 Alfa Romeo Giulia Quadrifoglio

AutoExpress reports the Alfa Romeo Giulia is expected to commence sales in the UK by the end of next year as the company continues to develop the model. Estimated price: around 53,000 GBP to boot, with the obvious Quadrifoglio high-performance version starting at a much higher price point to compete with the BMW M3.

Not much else is known but a projection of sometime in fall of 2016 is expected, with no word about when the US will get their version. Though, given how Europe tends to get cars before we do (those lucky bastards), we’ll most likely get ours after they do.

The Giulia Quadrifoglio, much like the M3, is to be complimented with versions other, lesser variants, built to compete directly with the normal BMW 3-Series, Audi A4, Mercedes-Benz C-Class, and Jaguar XE.

And while we obviously care more about the Quadrifoglio, what with its Ferrari-sourced twin-turbocharged V6 with around 510hp, we’re very much curious to see if Alfa can make a better car than the Germans, and even Japan’s Lexus IS.

Aren’t you?

Mazda teases a new sports car concept, could signal the return of the RX

Mazda excitingly teased a new sports car concept, which could finally lay all the rumors to rest regarding a new RX.

So many rumors bounced back and forth as to whether or not Mazda was actually going to produce a successor to the RX-8, with equally just as much of toss in terms of the fate of their renowned rotary motor.

But finally, thanks to this new teaser, it appears all is not lost.

Obviously, cards were kept close as to what exactly this new sports car could be, but the long hood and raked, sportback-like roof is very reminiscent of the original RX models. The long hood also implies front-engine placement, and of course, rear-wheel drive.

Is this exciting or what? Get ready for it at the 2015 Tokyo Motor Show later this year.

Mazda to Unveil New Sports Car Concept at Tokyo Motor Show

— Japan-debut of Mazda KOERU and racing-spec Mazda Roadsters among fourteen models on display —

HIROSHIMA, Japan, Sept. 29, 2015 /PRNewswire/ — Mazda Motor Corporation will hold the world premiere of a new sports car concept model at the 2015 Tokyo Motor Show, which runs from October 30 through November 8.*1 A total of 14 models will be on display at the Mazda stand, including crossover concept Mazda KOERU making its first appearance in Japan, two racing-spec Mazda Roadsters (known as Mazda MX-5 outside Japan) and the Cosmo Sport (110S outside Japan), first introduced in 1967.

The design of the sports car concept to be unveiled in Tokyo is modern but maintains a sense of lineage and authenticity, appearing almost to condense Mazda’s entire history of sports car development into a single model.

In line with the company’s theme for the Tokyo Motor Show this year, “Accelerate toward our dreams,” Mazda will make an appeal for the brand’s unique approach to driving pleasure. In addition to the sports car concept, Mazda KOERU will be on display along with new-generation models featuring SKYACTIV Technologies and KODO—Soul of Motion design. A motor sports exhibit will feature racing-spec Roadsters and the Cosmo Sport will complement a heritage display showing Mazda’s history of convention-defying engineering.

Oil Tech: Shell announces the end of its Arctic oil quest due to “disappointing” results

The 2016 GMC Sierra Elevation Edition gets updated for the new model year

2016 GMC Sierra Elevation Edition

General Motors has proved to enjoy adding special packaged versions of their cars in various forms, seemingly at the whim of the imaginations of their brand management. And this latest 2016 GMC Sierra Elevation Edition is no different.

Like previous special edition Sierras and GM cars, the Elevation Edition obviously starts life off as a 2016 Sierra double cab and only the double cab, since the Elevation package is not available in other forms.

What do you get? A whole bunch of aesthetic upgrades, such as color-matching body moldings, door handles, and mirror caps as well as a matching grille surround. So if you were hoping to maintain the blingy chrome look of the Sierra, the Elevation Edition isn’t for you.

The inside also gets some standard kit otherwise optional on the configuration list such as GMC’s full suite of apps and connectivity capabilities with the seven-inch screen, incorporating Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, as well as remote start and keyless entry, power-adjustable heated side-views, a 110-volt AC power outlet, a HiFi six-speaker audio system and more.

Power options still range from the standard 4.3L naturally-aspirated EcoTec3 V6 with 285hp and 305 lb-ft of twist, or the optional 5.3L EcoTec3 V7 with 355hp, with either the choice of two-wheel or four-wheel drive and a Eaton locking rear-differential as standard for both.

Report: Volkswagen’s “dieselgate” affects SEAT and Skoda TDI vehicles as well

Volkswagen’s “dieselgate” keeps going relentlessly deeper down the hole as Reuters reports Spanish automaker, SEAT, also owned and operated by Volkswagen Group, produced around 700,000 cars affected by the company’s illegal software with the 2.0L TDI mill.

The “defeat device” that enabled the cars to pass emissions tests by cheating on them was found to be equipped to those 700,000 examples out of the full lot of 11 million cars affected under Volkswagen’s portfolio.

With the latest tallies, the other 11 million consists of around 5 million Volkswagen models, 2.1 million Audi models, and about 1.2 TDI-powered Skodas. This shouldn’t be much of a surprise since Volkswagen owns both SEAT and Skoda and the current models produced by both brands are essentially heavily reengineered versions of certain preexisting Audi and Volkswagen cars.

Spy Shots: Oh hello 2017 Fiat 124 Spider, we see you

2016 Fiat 124 Spider Spy Shots

Recent images of the much-anticipated Fiat 124 Spider surfaced, providing us with a much more clear view of what to expect with the new Mazda-based sports car from Italy’s people’s car.

The car was reportedly spotted during an official photo shoot near Santa Barbara, California and is guessed to be a pre-production prototype. Either way, we can safely say we like what we see.

So far, from what we know, the new Fiat 124 is expected to be based on the latest Mazda Miata MX-5 thanks to an agreement between Mazda and Fiat-Chrysler Automobiles to build the compact roadster.

Of course, the Fiat itself features a body catered to fit the design language of the Italian automaker while playing slight homage to the original 1966 Fiat 124, first designed by Pininfarina.

Under the hood, we’re expecting Fiat’s latest 1.4L turbocharged engine with around 180hp while a faster Abarth version is also due to follow after the launch of the standard 124. Word is the Abarth version should get a detuned version of the same 1.75L turbocharged four-banger in the Alfa Romeo 4C.

Expect a debut at the Los Angeles Auto Show later this year.

Report: Paul Walker’s daughter blames Porsche, sues for his death

2004 Porsche Carrera GT Rear 3-4 Left Corner Carving

Talk about kicking someone to the ground while they’re down…

Remember the sad moment when famed Fast & Furious star, Paul Walker, tragically died in a crash while riding shotgun in Roger Rodas’ Porsche Carrera GT? So do we. But now, Walker’s death may have to carry on in infamy as his daughter is reportedly suing Porsche, citing numerous “design” flaws with the Carrera GT he was riding in at the time of his death.

Paul’s daughter, Meadow Walker, claims her father’s death was caused by a faulty seatbelt, which “snapped [Paul] Walker’s torso back with thousands of pounds of force, thereby breaking his ribs and pelvis.” The lawsuit also says it was defective in a manner where it trapped Paul inside the car, causing him to be burnt alive.

Additionally, the rest of the suit says Paul would still be alive had the Carrera GT be fitted with a stability control system. Porsche had the technology at the time, as did many other automobile companies, but did not equip it to the Carrera GT.

It further claims Porsche was aware that “the Carrera GT had a history of instability and control issues” and should have came with the system, which is “specifically designed to protect against the swerving actions inherent in hyper-sensitive vehicles of this type.”

Meadow Walker’s lawyer, Jeff Milam, told People magazine, “The Porsche Carrera GT is a dangerous car. It doesn’t belong on the street. And we should be without Paul Walker of his friend, Roger Rodas.”

The specific amount of money the lawsuit seeks to win was undisclosed. As if Porsche and their parent company, Volkswagen AG, didn’t have enough to deal with amid the media controversy of “dieselgate.”

We’re going to say, if she wins this lawsuit, we simply don’t want to live on this planet anymore. Also, given Paul himself was self-professed lover of speed and the automobile, we wonder what he’d think of this lawsuit simply because it infringes upon the very things he loved.

The 2016 Volkswagen Passat gets some updates all around, we still await the new model

2016 Volkswagen Passat

The United States always tends to be behind the curve in terms of getting new models on our shores, as the next-generation “B8” Volkswagen Passat has been available in Europe for almost a year now. And if you thought the 2016 model year Passat was essentially going to be Americanized version of the new B8, you’d unfortunately be wrong as the 2016 Passat is essentially the current model, plus some updates.

We start with the aesthetics, which was clearly given an update thanks to new headlights, new taillights, a redesigned trunk, and lots of new chrome trim. On top of the revised appearance, there’s also the addition of a new R-Line trim (finally), featuring subtly sportier and more aggressive bodywork in the form of extra black shadowline trim everywhere, such as on the lower front fascia, the lower body panels, and a revised rear bumper, giving the particular Passat in the press photos, the look of a Star Wars Stormtrooper.

The interior also gains so enhancements with a new dashboard and gauge cluster, a new steering wheel, and the use of more premium-feeling materials. There’s also the addition of Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and MirrorLink compatibility.

Power is still supplied by the choice of two four-bangers, in gas and diesel form, with the gasser being a 1.8L TSI unit and the oil-burning being a 2.0L TDI mill. Though, obviously, thanks to the recent “Dieselgate” scandal, the TDI model is obviously on hold. Those craving for more power can still opt for Volkswagen’s naturally-aspirated 3.6L V6 with 280hp.

Prices start at $22,440 with sales commencing later this year.

New York, N.Y.  – Volkswagen of America, Inc. is pleased to announce the debut of the new 2016 Volkswagen Passat, a midsize sedan that is designed for the American lifestyle and built in Volkswagen’s state-of-the-art factory in Chattanooga, Tenn. The 2016 Passat features a winning combination of design, interior and cargo space, class-leading technology, available driver assistance systems, and powerful, yet frugal, engines. In addition, a revised trim structure will enhance the Passat’s value story.

Design

The 2016 Passat features more aggressive styling than its predecessor, with a new hood, front fenders, grille, front and rear bumpers, trunklid and available LED  headlights and taillights. In short, the only sheetmetal that remains unchanged is the roof, the doors, and the body side stamping.

“We applied a progressive design strategy with the new Passat, giving the car a dynamic presence and a more sophisticated look,” said Klaus Bischoff, Head of Design, Volkswagen. ”We have integrated several new design elements, including a sculpted, domed hood that significantly sets the car apart from its predecessor.”

Slimmer headlights, a more substantial four-bar grille, and the muscular, domed hood all work together to give the Passat a wider, more planted stance from the front. At the back, the new car has a premium European-style flush rear license plate area. Additionally, a new chrome strip on the trunk makes the rear lights appear lower, enhancing the grounded appearance, while chrome on the window surrounds, bumpers, and door trim adds to the premium nature of the design. Available on all trim lines, dramatic LED headlights and taillights provide better lighting performance with reduced energy consumption.

For the first time, Volkswagen is offering an R-Line® version of the Passat. This sporty model features unique rocker panels, a stylized front bumper with contrasting black accents, a modified rear diffuser, and 19” anthracite Salvador aluminum-alloy wheels shod with 235/40 ZR rated tires.

Inside, the 2016 Passat gets an extensively upgraded interior, for a more sophisticated look and feel. A new instrument panel features two large gauges and the center stack incorporates VW’s latest MIB II infotainment system.  The interior also features upgraded materials, a new steering wheel and column stalk design, two-tone décor panels, and refined chrome and piano black trim.  Heatable rear seats are a new available feature, along with Easy-Open keyless access that opens the trunk via moving a foot near the rear of the vehicle.

Technology

The 2016 Passat features Volkswagen’s second-generation “modular infotainment platform”, also known as MIB II. The system features touchscreens as standard equipment on all models. On most models, the display utilizes a capacitive touch sensor (similar to smartphone and tablet technology) enabling gesture controls like swiping and pinch-zooming rather than the resistive touchscreens that require pressure and have slightly longer response times.  Most MIB II units also feature a proximity sensor, which detects when a hand is nearby and automatically switches its display to allow easier selection of specific features. USB and Bluetooth® connectivity are standard on all 2016 Passat models.

The MIB II system also serves as the foundation for the available Volkswagen Car-Net® system, one of the most comprehensive suites of connected vehicle services and features available in the automotive industry today. VW Car-Net includes App-Connect technology, featuring the three major smartphone integration platforms—Apple CarPlay®, Android Auto™ and MirrorLink®. This allows seamless integration with the vast majority of smartphones available today.

Volkswagen also offers a combination of new safety and driver assistance systems in the 2016 Passat. The Automatic Post-Collision Braking System, standard on all 2016 Passat models, builds on the premise that a collision is rarely a single, instantaneous action, but rather a series of events that follow the initial impact—which can cause additional collisions. The system helps address this by applying the brakes after a primary collision is detected by the airbag sensors, thus helping to reduce residual kinetic energy and, in turn, reduce the chance of additional damage.

Depending on trim level, Passat models come equipped with the following advanced driver assistance systems: Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC); Forward Collision Warning and Autonomous Emergency Braking (Front Assist); Blind Spot Monitor with Rear Traffic Alert; Lane Departure Warning (Lane Assist), which actively steers the car back into its lane; and Parking Steering Assistant (Park Assist). All 2016 Passat models have rearview cameras as standard equipment.

Powertrains

The 2016 Passat is available in the United States with three powertrains: the 1.8-liter turbocharged and direct-injection TSI® four cylinder; 2.0-liter TDI®; and the 3.6-liter VR6® engine, which makes 280 horsepower—one of the highest outputs in the midsize sedan class. The 2016 Passat 1.8T has an EPA estimated highway fuel economy rating of 38 mpg with the automatic transmission.

Full pricing for the new 2016 Passat will be available closer to launch later this year, but the 1.8T S model starts at $22,440, which is the same price as the previous base model when equipped with a six-speed automatic transmission. The Passat is produced at the Volkswagen Chattanooga assembly plant, the only automotive manufacturing facility in the world to receive Platinum certification by the U.S. Green Building Council’s Leadership in Energy & Environmental Design (LEED) program.
