Volkswagen just beat the Nürburgring Nordschleife lap time for fastest front-wheel drive production vehicle

2017 Volkswagen Golf GTI Clubsport S

Volkswagen proudly hopped on the PR news wire with some good news for a change to announce that they just broke the record for the world’s fastest front-wheel drive production vehicle to lap the Nürburgring Nordschleife. And they did it with a special edition Golf GTI Clubsport S three-door.

This lap record comes just in time for the Golf GTI’s 40th anniversary, and the Golf GTI Clubsport S itself will debut at the Wörthersee Festival tomorrow.

Speaking of which, this fancy GTI comes with sticky Michelin Sport Cup 2 tires with 19-inch Pretoria wheels, standard HID headlights, LED daytime runners, and can be had in three hues of Deep Black Pearl Effect, Pure White, and Tornado Red.

Helping things go fast is an upgraded 2.0L TSI four-banger reworked to produce 310hp and 280 lb-ft of twist. Mated strictly to a six-speed manual, 0-62 happens in just 5.8 seconds with a top speed of 162 MPH.

The time clocked in was 7 minutes and 49.21 seconds, with German race car driver, Benny Leuchter at the helm.

A total of 400 Golf GTI Clubsport S examples will be produced, though there wasn’t any word about whether or not the US will get any.
